Cake Cutting & Cupcake Cakes

Posted this on the food and Cake board, but theres not much traffic there, so I thought I'd try here.

How does the traditional "cake cutting" work with a cupcake cake?

Does the B & G cut into a cupcake? Do they get a cake top tier and cut into that? What if they want to save it for their 1st anniversary?

FI and I are considering cupcakes for our wedding cake. If we do that we are also going to get a small 1 tier cake for cutting and we will save that for our anniversary.

It works the same way as with a regular cake if you have a small one for cutting. We put our hands on the knife, cut a slice of cake, and then fed it to each other. Then guests were welcome to come up and get a cupcake.

DH and I had a cupcake tower - no top cake. We cut and split a cupcake and then invited everyone up to take a cupcake or two. (We had enough cupcakes for all of our guests plus a second cupcake for about half to two-thirds, and had about 24 left at the end of the night.)

I really recommend talking to your baker about freezing a tier. It can be incredibly hit or miss if that is succesful - you need to wrap and store the cake carefully - and if it isn't successful the cake can taste, well, not good.

We just cut a cupcake. I didn't want to freeze anything, and my baker provides a complimentary dozen for your one year anniversary. You can always check with your baker to see if they offer something like that.

We had a small cake on top to cut, but even if we didn't H and I would have just fed each other a cupcake and nixed the whole "cutting" portion.

As for freezing the top tier, I just wouldn't. I love cake too much to freeze it for a year just to eat some nasty, old, most likely freezer burned piece of cake. For our one year anniversary H and I just went and bought some of the same flavored cupcakes from the place we ordered them for our wedding.
