small weddings..no DJ, thoughts?

Hi! New to the board and just started planning my wedding for next September at the seacoast in NH. I plan on having a small wedding less than 40people. For those of you who had, are having or have been to a smaller wedding(i never have!) was there a dj or and Ipod, dancing, special dances ie 1st dance, father daughter ect. Would love some feed back from what you have experienced or plan on doing at your small wedding.

TIA!!!

One of my cousins had a smaller wedding.  They hired an organist (played a keyboard on a stand).  They did do a first dance, father/daughter dance, and Mother/son dance.  They didn't do any other dancing, but they had the organist play through the reception.  It was a very relaxed. Very nice!  Smile

The only small wedding I went to was my cousin's, and he was married in St. Thomas. It was a super-fun destination wedding. My one gripe, however, was that he DIDN'T have a DJ, just a steel drum band. I loooooove to dance, so I was disappointed. I would think if your crowd isn't a "partying" crowd no DJ would be fine, but if they are, I'd look into at least getting an iPod and designating someone to watch over it Smile

I really think it depends on what you want and what your crowd is like.  Do you want to do special dances?  If so, then you should do them.  Does your family love to hit the dance floor?  Than maybe you should consider a DJ.  Personally, I love to dance so I'd be bummed if there was no dancing, but ultimately it's up to you.  If you decide that you want to do special dances only, an iPod would work fine for those dances and just to have some background music (you have to at least have that, IMO).  I would say figure out what you want and the tone you want to set (dinner party vs. dancing party) and go from there.  HTH!
