Ceremony Musicians - who to use??

Hi :)
I am trying to find a resonable ceremony musician for our wedding next October. I can't seem to find one that is priced decently. I tried to contact a college music department because someone suggested I do that, but the student charged $400-$500 to do the ceremony! Does anyone have any suggestions? I am not too picky about what instrument or how many people, quite frankly I would be happy with only 1 person playing if it sounded good! Thanks for everyone's help! :)

I don't know how helpful this would be, but have you contacted several different universities?

Try Capital, Otterbein and ODU as well as Ohio State. There has to be a student there. The performing arts high school has awesome musicians there. My sister graduated from that program and they are just amazing musicians.

    Good Luck.

We hired Doug Hare as our ceremony pianist and his total ended up being less than 300.  If you mention that you heard of him on the knot by me, he gives a referral discount too i believe (don't worry, I don't get anything out of this, so this is for real)!  He was great and very willing to help you make choices on your ceremony music.  He played for our ceremony as well as our cocktail hour and everyone had compliments about him for us.  :)

Might be worth emailing if you arent too picky about instruments or needing more than one person to play.  He's no obligation and just an all around nice guy.  His wife is his manager, so you'll probably be in contact with her first.

    Good luck!

We used Fermata Music for our ceremony. We waited until about a month and a half before the wedding to book because my husband and I couldn't figure out exactly what to agree on. My husband wanted an organist and I wanted a trumpet player (I thought if we were going to play Trumpet Voluntary and Rondeau a trumpet would be perfect), and we needed a cantor. Fermata provided all three for around $500 (our musicians were half of that, I think). Another quote I had from another company was almost $1000- and I was NOT going to spend that for and hour and half's worth of music.

Mitch was great to work with, provided suggestions of which instrument(s) to use for each song we played, and he was really organized and was good at communication leading up to the wedding. The musicians and cantor were also phenomenal! My husband even paused, turned to me while we were kneeling at the alter during communion, and said "the music is really great."

Kyle Ballantine is a music teacher at Zanesville High School, but he double majored in organ in college. (I didn't even know that was possible??)  I am not sure of his prices, but he does it on the side so I think it is probably pretty reasonable.  He might be worth checking out at least.  I believe his phone number is 740-819-8455.

We're using a violinist from Paragon music.  They are very affordable.  I've only spoken with them on the phone but they seem very nice and I'm confident she'll do a great job.

Supertonic String Quartet is fabulolus as far as strings go. A huge selection and around 400-500 for 4 musicians.  Also Courtney Kania is a harpist (I went to HS with her) and she is amazing. She has/had contracts with Disney and is a wiz on her harp (has been playing for over 15 years I think). You can Youtube her to see a sample of what she can do. if you want more info, PM me.

We are having Christine Ramsey who plays the harp. I looked into violinists and they were ridiculously expensive. I like the idea of the harp though, something totally different. We are still looking for a piano player for our cocktail hour.
