Buying or Renting Chair Covers

Aloha!

I am having a challenge digesting the cost of renting chair covers. I have heard that some brides buy their chair covers and sell them afterwards. This sounds like a much more economical idea as at least you're not throwing your money away completely. However, I reckon the downside is that they take a lot of time to put on before the ceremony and take off at the end.

So my question is: have any of you had experience with purchasing your own chair covers? If so, how was the quality, and was it a hassle with the extra time they required? Also, if any brides have a summer wedding on Oahu and are contemplating purchasing chair covers (ivory), let me know and perhaps we can do a chair cover share!

Re: Buying or Renting Chair Covers

  • There are a lot of expenses that you'll have trouble digesting....  But, do you really want to deal with ordering chair covers, managing shipping to a destination, hauling them back home and then trying to sell them?  In addition to set-up, what if they're wrinkled?  What if they stain - will you clean them before you sell them?

I have no idea what they cost - I'm just rattling off a few things to consider.  In the scheme of things, I bet you'll have more important stuff to haul over there (a lot of brides are hauling glass for candy bars and center pieces).  I sense, from photos mostly, that a lot of Hawaii weddings use chivari chairs - see images here.  They're pretty, fit in with the island, and - I assume - wouldn't cost more than the cost of chair and chair rental.

Just my $0.02.  Everyone makes their own choices as to what's worth it to them and what isn't, and no one is wrong.  For example, I'm seriously considering going on my own with regards to flowers, and I think a lot of brides would not think that's an area to cut corners on.
  • We thought about it, but then our WC explained that the cost of chair covers was notj just for the material, but for the labor to set-up and breakdown, cost of cleaning, transorting to/from property, etc.   She also told us a story about someone bringing in own chair covers from Phillipines......they didn't fit chairs, had to be pressed ecause they were all wrinkled and had to pay hotel to set-up so in the end they actually paid more.
  • We made chair sashes for my daughters wedding. They were beautiful but it was a pain and very time consuming, even though we used velcro, to put them on a 100 chairs. Destiny is correct, part of it is them putting them on. Also we had the chance to measure and re-measure as they were being made so that they fit the venue chairs perfectly. Not sure if you would have this option. We were able to resell them for $1.50 each after the wedding but I think part of that was because they were custom.
  • Thanks so much for the feedback on this. I now realize that buying them would be too much of a hassle. I think I'll just go ahead and rent them. I wish I could just leave the chairs as is, but chair covers really do transform the look and add elegance.
  • Sad.  I wrote a really good reply to this and TK ate it.  Hungry bastard.

Anyway, in addition to the conclusions already reached here - too much hassle - have you considered chivari chairs?  A lot of HI brides use them, and they're also very pretty IMO.  They may be cheaper than chairs with covers - I'm not sure.
