Name Changing

Okay, very random, but I am getting married two weeks after school starts.  I am an elementary school teacher and works with kiddos grades kindergarten - 5th grades.  To make it easier, should I just start the year with my married name?  My maiden name is Unger, so it's super easy for the kids to say.  My future name is long and tricky.  Thoughts?

Re: Name Changing

  • I would probably do it and get it over with. That way you start out the year with your new name, and your work can get your stuff taken care of as well.

  • I'd start the year off with the new name. Unless you can come up with a nice combo haha. When I got engaged my kids asked what my new name would be...they ended up combining the 2 so I was known the rest of the year as Ms. Camel. Lovely.

If you aren't comfortable going by your married name until you're married I don't think it's the end of the world to change during the year but with the younger kids they may struggle.

  • I would start the new year with the new name, if you are changing it.

My mom is a teacher and our last name can be hard to pronounce for kids, so most of her students just call her by her last initial, so she's known as Mrs. C. I had another middle school teacher like that, who went by Mrs. M, who has one of the weirdest last names ever that I still forget how to spell half the time.
  • I think starting the year off with your married name is definitely the way to go.

  • I'd start with your married name since it's only 2 weeks later.

  • Same here.  If it was Christmas I'd say switch mid year, but for two weeks - keep it simple and just use one name for the whole year.
  • I agree with everyone else, and suggest start with your new name.

Thanks everyone!   I was leaning towards starting off with my married name; however, wanted to see if there were any cons about starting off with my maiden name.
