July 2012 Weddings

Are you having a program?

Are you having a program?  I was all into the idea of making a fan one but I think I'm over it now.  My ceremony is 30 mins long.  My good friend is officiating, there might be a reading or two, we'll say our vows (or maybe he'll say our vows for us to repeat) and then we'll be married!  And then what will people do with the programs? After the ceremony people will literally walk 10 steps to cocktail hour.  What will they do with them?  Have you kept the programs you've received?

Just seems like extra work for nothing.

Re: Are you having a program?

  • We're doing it for sentimental reasons and so that people can use them as fans. It's not like I'm afraid people are going to get lost in the middle of our 15 minute ceremony. I do see your point about everyone probably throwing them away though.

  • We will because we're having a Catholic mass and many people are unfamiliar with the way it'll go. Unfortunately. For them. They're going to unpleasantly surprised. :( hahahahaha

  • I understand it for a catholic mass. I'll definitely do it for that  but for my 30 minute or less ceremony the more I think about it the more I feel it's pointless.

  • We are doing them mainly because I have picked a few significant songs and readings and I'd like people to know who all is involved. We are doing a pouch type thing tied to the chairs which will serve as ceremony decor as well...and idea I got here on TK.
  • I'm doing them. I am Jewish and having a lot of those elements in the ceremony (though not a full traditional ceremony). My FI is not. I don't want his family to be confused as to what is happening. I figure most people can either put them back in the basket, stick them in a purse, or find a trash can.

We are doing a program for reasons similar to dramaqueen.  We are having an interfaith ceremony with Jewish and Catholic traditions so my mom and I thought it would be nice to have a program that explained the different traditions. We also wanted to list our wedding party's names, acknowledge our parents, etc.

  • nope! but I'm thinking of doing something this though:

  • I havent decided. I felt like this one thing I could maybe skip as well to save on yet another printed item to buy. I've never kept a ceremony program, it's usually in the trash by the cocktail hour. The only reason I am still decididng because I want my bridal party and parents to be recognized. But I'm thinking at the reception they will be announced and recognized and us making a quick speech tahnk my parents is more heartfelt than having names on a ceremony program.

  • Yup. We're doing the fan programs (or more like I will be doing them since I'll be DIY-ing them) and since our whole wedding is outdoors I think they will come in handy through out the day.

  • I am doing them.  I want people to know who my bridal party is and recognize everyone involved.  I am doing fan programs and know I will want one for sentimental reasons anyways.

Exactly this!  And also just the idea that who really keeps them?  I remember making the programs for my friend's wedding and I know I didn't keep one and I'm the one who spent HOURS making them!

Little Moments love that blackboard idea!!

  • I'm doing fans that just have our name/ date and thank you for sharing our special day! I do realize they will just get thrown away but I found them for very cheap and I thought it was a nice little touch. Our wedding is outside and has minimal decorations. Plus even though our ceremony is only 30 min. Guests are supposed to arrive 30 minutes early and hopefully we'll be on time:)
  • We will be having programs.  Even though we are not Catholic, we are having a Christian ceremony in my Presbyterian church, so there will be some religious aspects that people will not be familiar with.

I also always, personally, like to be able to identify everyone's roles in the wedding (i.e., I like reading the bridal party list, seeing who I know, I like when people will say, for example: Matron of Honor, Jane Smith, Cousin of the Bride, so I know how people know each other).  As others have said, yes, they will be identified later at the reception - but people like to know who is standing by your side as you actually go through the marriage ceremony. I think listing all of your attendants and other helpers (guest book attendants, readers, etc.) in the program is a nice way to honor them and to announce to all of your guests who is helping with your wedding.  Just my opinion on this :)

Programs are also a nice way to pass the time for a few minutes as a guest when you are waiting for the wedding to start and want something to read.

Are they necessary? No, and I absolutely see your point about people throwing them away. But to me, they are a nice touch, keep the guests in the know of what is happening, and inform guests of things that they otherwise might not know.
  • Yes only because I am having a catholic mass....

  • Yep I am because they're cute! We don't have a lot of decorations and our wedding will be outside so we'll have our program as fans too.

With the way the weather has been lately, my dad says it'll probably be "143 degrees in the shade, river will be boiling, and sidewalks will be melting". So I think having a fan would be nice.....?? Haha!
