Cake Question

So, we never really got an estimate from our baker. I've tried to get an estimate, but she doesn't seem to be able to give me one.

I'm curious if she hasn't been able to provide one yet since we don't have an exact number of guests. Did anyone have an estimate or final cake cost without exact numbers? I feel like I should finalize this soon!

Re: Cake Question

  • They should be able to give you some type of estimate like a per slice fee.

  • Our cake cost was included with the package we got from our venue.  I'm not sure why your baker can't give you an estimated cost based on your estimated number (or a cost per slice).  I don't think you'd be able to get a final (total) cost until your final numbers were in.  She should have set prices (even if it's a sliding cost per slice based on how many people you have) and that should be in the contract that you signed when you reserved your date.
  • That is weird she should be able to give you one.  Ours based it on our guest count.  We invited 120, and they usually account for a small percentage not eating cake, so she based it on that.  I used those estimates to decide on my bakery, and actually haggled ours down to the lower price.  You need to demand a quote, especially now that your numbers are a little more nailed down.  If it's not satisfactory, I would say you need to shop around.

Ours is going to be $450 for around 120 ppl.

  • I know she mentioned the price would fluctuate based on the design and flavors, but I've provided her with what we are looking for.

I am thinking I will give her a call this afternoon to try to get a real estimate since we have a ballpark figure now.

  • They should definitely be able to provide you with an estimate.  How else are you supposed to budget the appropriate funds?

I get this too, but during the first consultation, she should have gotten an idea of what you wanted, i.e. buttercream or fondont because those costs are really different for most places.  Then if you added things, she could increase the price.  When I went in this weekend, I asked about having a branch with leaves going up our cake and since they all would have had to be fondont, she said that would be an extra $75.  Nope, I decided to go simple with a ribbon.  Oh well.
I can't believe she hasn't given you a baseline price yet!

  • That's odd. She should have a general fee ie. $4/serving for her normal cakes and then if you require extra decorating, elaborate fillings or flavours be able to tell you it adds and extra $0.50 per serrving or whatever.

    That's just bad business practicies.

  • She should have given you a cost per slice.  Bakeries (atleast ones I have dealt with) will give you the cost based on the most of basic cakes and go up from there depending on special flavors, decorating, etc.

I'd be nervous if some basic info wasn't provided at your initial consultation.

  • Wow - I hope you called them this afternoon and got some answers! I find it hard to believe she doesn't have "base" prices (for the cake) and then extra charges for decoration, shapes, fillings, etc. For our cake, we paid $90!  We are providing some fake leaves to decorate and the topper.
