Daily Topic Thread: Martha Who Monday

Good Morning Ladies!

Let's start with a question... do you have a room designated for crafts? If you do, care to share a pic? If you don't, but have a dream craft room in mind, share a pic of that instead :)

Personally, I do not have one... yet. At the new house (we are currently having is designed), I have asked to have a craft/hobby room. These are some of my inspirations:

Now onto this week's topic.... Vellum Paper!

When I was first looking for ideas for the wedding, I came across lovely candle luminaries that I wanted to use for table numbers. I also then wanted to use the same style for a memorial candle. The glow from the candle through the translucent paper was just beautiful. I almost ordered them from Etsy but held off; and I'm glad I did because it is probably one of the easiest DIY projects out there!

Vallum paper can be found at Michael's (and this week, the 12x12 sheet is on for 3/99cents) or I would also recommend Paper and More. If you have an inkjet printer, you can create your own luminaries at home (laser can work but not as well). You can create whatever design, message, size or shape you'd like! They would make lovely table numbers, place cards, menu items,  and of course memorial candles.

My weekend project was a memorial candle for the reception. My venue does not allow open flame (has to be 1" below the top of the holder) so I could not use the paper directly on the candle. I decided to decorate the vase which will hold the candle instead.

MY recipe:
Sheet of Vellum Paper
Printer
Candle Vase (Dollar Store)
Ribbon
Glue dots
Bling

I designed the image in photoshop and printed. Glued the paper to the vase and decorated - that simple!

MORE fun ideas for vellum paper:

*I may even attempt this myself!*

Pleated Vellum Hurricane Shades
**great for summer party or outdoor wedding!**

I will also be recreating something similar to the picture below to add to our wedding programs:
I'll let you know how it goes ;)

Do you have any other vellum paper projects to share??
Let's see them!

  • I may need to try my hand at making that memorial candle vase. FH's mother passed away 4 months ago. We'd like to do something like that but all the ones I saw online were generic looking and expensive which I wasn't happy about.

  • I don't currently have a craft room, things seem to be stored in the corner of my office (that corner is growing to slowly take the office over) and I mainly do crafts in the livingroom. I can't wait until we move because getting a craft room for me is one of the priorities in the change!

As for what it will look like, I actually have those same two images pinned hahaha
  • I do not have a room because I am not crafty at all, but do share my sewing room with the formal living room........

  • LOL Britt! There are soooo many awesome craft rooms on pinterest - they make me drool lol

I am thinking of adding some vellum paper to my candles on my centerpieces. I think that will add the softness I'm looking for without the work of spraying them.

  • Sounds like it will add the effect AND be easier, I vote yes :)

  • I so want a craft/hobby room when the time comes for  FI & I to get a house.

I don't have photoshop to do cool designs for DIY paper stuff =[ Would PowerPoint work?

Absolutely! Anything would work! It's just like printing a normal page of text really. I use photoshop because I'm on a Mac at home and it's just easier for manipulating designs. But you could even use word perfect lol

  • Sweet! I might just have to try this out. I've been trying to think of ways to make a sign for my flower girl to carry down the aisle

  • Right now my craft room is basically a walk in closet with everything stuffed in it :-/ But once we move in with FI I will be sharing his office since he really doesn't use it much anyways!
    I'd love something like this!
But the office is too small.

I love the idea of the photo centerpieces, I saw on Pinterest using the vellum to cover a lamp shade with pictures on it, I love that idea since we're having a tent reception!

And I love the lamps.. they are so sweet and totally DIYable!

  • This is my current craft room.  It's pretty messy, but there's a lot of junk stuffed into a small space.  It's kind of the only room in the house that's "mine."  FI keeps trying to call it my office and asks why I don't do homework in "my office."  I've told him about 100 times that it's a craft room and not an office (he has an office that I don't really use, so I just do homework on the dining room table).  He just doesn't get it.  The room is so small, when we were looking at the house, the previous owners only had a treadmill in it.  I look forward to someday in the future when I can have a much bigger room for crafts and office stuff.

BTW, those wine glass lamps look amazing!  Some of my centerpieces are wine glasses with floating candles, but those look like they'd be just as cute.

  • I do not have a crafty room yet-which is quite sad b/c I am a creative memories consulting-i have 3 tubs full of scrapbooking paper and stickers that go in the spare bedroom closet. After we get married FI is moving in to the condo with me so it will be a few years till I get a craft room. I love doing crafty things I just do not have a room for all my crafty stuff

We just do not want to buy a house right now since we are not positive we will be staying in the same town or area in a year or two alot depends on the job prospects and if I decide to choose one career path over another-if I choose dance then we are moving and if i choose hospitality there is always the potential I get promoted to a different resort.
  • My craft room is actually DD's former brdroom, now my "spare/guest" room!!! Right now it is so full of wedding stuff I can't find the bed.... LOL
We will be moving to my hubby's childhood home in the next two years & I will have a room JUST for crafts then!!! Not sure how I will set it up, but I do like the way those two rooms look
  • MrsBassPlaya - I really need MY space!! I don't have anywhere in this house that I can call my own. FI has the basement to watch TV and chill, my son has his toy/tv room (plus his room) and where do I go? My computer is on the dinning room table so "my" space in technically the kitchen (I feel like I never leave it!!!). I do my crafts where there is space and when no one is around because I don't have a space of my own.
In the new house, I WILL have my own room for crafts, for my computer, for ME!

On a side note, I did add the vellum paper to my centerpiece... looks good :)

You go girl!!! Haha we don't have our own place right now (and won't until after the wedding when FI and I aren't long distance any more) so my own room just for crafts is a far off dream!  But, FI always talks about having a man cave so I'm going to start pushing back for a woman cave!  I'm doing wine glasses with candles centerpieces too!! Looks like I know what to do with all those dang wine glasses after the wedding!
