Dieting with a wacky thyroid?

I have been "dieting" for about 8 months now. I was showing a good amount of progress (about 15lbs. lost) during the first 4 months. Then my typically hypothyroid went hyperthyroid. I was eating insatiably...there was no stopping me. My doctor didn't suggest appetite suppressants due to the thyroid issues. The weight has come back in the past 4 months and then some. I need help. I am exercising at home doing Zumba on my Wii and a basic set of floor exercises (situps, pushups, free weights) interchanging for 5 days a week. I try to eat between 1200 and 1400 calories a day and keep track with it on sparkpeople. There is no weight loss, only weight gain (and it's not muscle) most of which is in my stomach area. Does anyone know of a good diet for thyroids or a safe appetite suppressant I can take? Any help is appreciated. I see an endocrynologist for this but he is not helpful with the weightloss help outside of eat healthy and exercising...which I am doing. Thanks for any help!

Re: Dieting with a wacky thyroid?

  • I would ask your endocrynologist to refer you to a nutritionist.  These are medical issues that you are dealing with and unless your doctor is on TK, no one here is qualified to give you any advice on this issue.  Good luck though.  My thyroid is borderline hypothyroid so weight loss for me is really difficult also.

  • Aww that sounds really rough!
I would say that although there is so much pressure on the bride to "loose weight to look good in the dress" by everyone, really what matters is how much your future husband loves you just the way you are.  You will be beautiful whether you lose weight or not on your wedding day.  I wonder if it might be better just to focus on just getting your thyroid settled down instead of losing weight right now.  I bet thats what your fiance would want too.
  • A common misconception is that the wedding itself should be all the motivation one needs to lose weight. Most brides have access to the gym, diet plans that will work and, in general, know what it takes to lose weight for their wedding day. The missing ingredient in most cases is motivation, which must be a vital part of a bride’s diet and exercise plan.

Before you start your wedding weight loss plan you must first identify healthy methods that will not only keep you motivated throughout your wedding planning, but will help you develop healthy habits to continue even after you exchange your vows. Follow these simple steps to help increase your motivation so that you will look fabulous and feel healthy while wearing your dream gown.

I don't know what TK's problem is with fonts and quote today so I appologize for this format.

This is probably the least helpful advice that you could have written.  No kidding that most brides have access to diets plans and gyms.  I've worked with nutritionists, personal trainers, go to the gym at least three times a week, do yoga, swim and track every damn calorie.  Guess what?  When you have a thyroid problem like OP, it doesn't help.  I put on 15 pounds after surgery two years ago and cannot lose the weight for anything.  The attitude that I'm not motivated enough to lose the weight is insulting.  The only thing I haven't tried is anorexia or bulimia.

  • Thanks for the help tldh...this was my case also was the putting on weight after surgery which kept me in bed for almost 4 months and then a recovery period of attemting to feel "normal" after that. My weight has always been a struggle for me even though I have been active since I was a child, playing softball, soccer, basketball, track, swimming, tennis and a season of football (I was the first girl to play for my high school and I wasn't a kicker...I was a tight end!). I jogged every day up until I became pregnant with my first son...after his birth is when my thyroid went hypo...and it stayed. I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis so mine is every where, not just slow.  I love exercising and being physically fit. I don't want to be fat. I don't want to struggle to have to be skinny, but I do, as do many people out there. I am not looking into losing weight just for the wedding. My fiance loves me no matter my size as he tells me and shows me every day. I am trying to do it for overall health. I figured losing the weight would give me more energy and help my thyroid issues...for some reason this time it back-fired and now I am just looking for a little bit of extra help. I have been to a dietician but she wasn't very helpful outside of the portion size and followig the food pyramid...all of which I have known all along and follow. My motivation is my quality of life and the length of my life that I look forward to living the rest of with my future husband. :)
I'm assuming that the OP isnt' aware of the diffiulty of having Hashimoto's and weight management and they are probably assuming that I am using my thyroid issues as an excuse...which I am not.
