The Ben Franklin Wedding PIP

Since so many have been curious about this theme, here is how the Ben Franklin Wedding went.  It started off as a Philadelphia theme and then morphed.  I hope the writing on the pics shows up.

Before we found a gorgeous historic home (now Faunbrook B&B if you want to look it up), it started with the Save the Date...

I was wondering how to build on this theme for the invitations when I remembered the first words of the US Constuitution which was also written in Philadelphia...

(We the people of the United States in order to form a more perfect union)

At that point, I was trying to figure out what to put in the OOT bags and the Ben Franklin theme was born.  DH jumped on his favorite quote, and guests found a wrapped bottle of beer with their soft Philly pretzel and tourist brochures...

(Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy)

A bookmark keepsake soon followed for teh OOT bags

(An investment in knowledge pays the best interest)

and instructions regarding Ben's grave

(A penny saved is a penny earned)

we included a penny in the cards for the guests to leave

Our guest book consisted of loose leaf sheets of "parchment" paper and we had a couple of feather ballpoint pens with them to write marital advice for us....

(The doors of wisom are never shut)

The back of the wedding ceremony program

(Marriage is the most natural state of man and the state in which you will find solid happiness)

We wanted a cake that was a little old fashioned - almond cake with buttercream frosting decorated with live roses.  Trix, you would have been happy - the slices were about 3/4 of an inch thick.....

DH was ecstatic at how well his Arizona State mascot cake turned out

....and here's a picture of us after the garden ceremony.

  • You look beautiful!  Congratulations!  I'm glad it went so well!

Please tell me Ben Franklin came to your office for your bach party, knew everything about him, and then stayed on in character to give relationship advice to the men in the office ;)

"I think bablingbrooke is the 13 yr old marring her cousin at the town hall. Lets all give her a big hand. And hope her inbred children can live normal lives." -tabs.

A word of warning from your friends at Cracked.com: Remember that text is going to be how you make your first impression over the internet; if every third word you type is misspelled, people will automatically assume that you're a moron.
  • Congrats tldh! You look gorgeous and I love the natural light in that pic!

I totally love the Ben Franklin theme (science nerd here)!
  • Sorry Brooke.  Ben Franklin starts out at $500 an hour for his time - I wanted a photograph of him for the OOT bags.  Also, given his life as a diplomat in France, I don't know that we'd really want relationship advice from him, but he has a quote for absolutely everything.

Thanks Autumn.  DH wants to make this pic our Christmas card this year.

  • Great photos! You looked lovely.

Is that why people leave pennies on his grave, because of the "penny saved" quote? I've been to Philadelphia a few times and have always wondered why people leave pennies for him.

MH is a craft beer enthusiast and I for his recent birthday I bought him a big "Beer is proof ..." sign that he saw in a shop on our honeymoon.

  • What a beautiful wedding!  I love all things Philadelphia :)

    Your cake is gorgeous.
  • tldh:  everything looked beautiful.  And I loved all the Ben Franklin tie-ins.  Is my slice of cake being shipped FedEx or UPS?  =)

Thanks for sharing the photos.  Congrats to you and your DH.

Brooke:  I completely got the reference to the Bach. party.  Did you see last night's Season 7 opener?

"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • That is such an awesome theme! You look amazing :) I'm a total history buff, so this hits my nerd haha
  • Wow!  So cool!  You two must be so creative.  There's no way I'd ever be able to come up with all the Ben Franklin quotes and make them fit everything so well.

I absolutely love your cake.  So beautiful, and the pic of you and your H is just gorgeous!

  • @Trix: Yes and I loved the opening bit!  So sad Steve Carell's leaving.

  • How fantabulous. Love the creativity! Hey, how was Triple Fresh? they work out well for you? We have ours this Saturday.. I also absolutely love the natural light of the garden photo you posted. We're hoping for some of that ourselves since we're marrying at 5 in our backyard.. Good luck to you and congrats!
  • brooke:  DH and I laughed like crazy at the opening bit:  especially when Toby said "It was better".  We were also rolling at the end:  Michael getting counseling from Toby.  What an awesome set-up for recurring bits.

There is no way that's not going to be awesome.  I have a class that goes until 9 pm on Thursdays (stupid!) but fortunately I got home early enough to start it over (our cable company lets you start some shows over from the beginning if you catch it before the end).

  • Sof0830 - Triple Fresh was incredible.  It's the only wedding where I've actaully heard people raving about the food.  We did heavy hor d'oeurves and there was still food left over.  I hope the weather for your wedding is just as beautiful as it was for ours.

Stage -  I don't think you were the only one. That's why I waited until it was over to show that this wasn't some cartoony wedding.  Some things just can't be described with words.

mbcdefg - yep.  That's why his grave is always covered in pennies

Joy - thanks for the idea to use the soft pretzel.  I actually got them in Moorestown and wrapped them to death in wax paper.  They were still soft when the last of the guests checked in

frogurt - God bless the internet
