Boston Public Library

So I went to the look at the Boston Public Library over the weekend for our venue because my cousin got married there two years ago and I loved it.  Apparently there is a new caterer there, The Catered Affair, who has literally tripled the price it costs to get married there because my cousins wedding cost nearly one third of what they quoted to us for nearly the same guest count.  WHAT?  My cousin used another caterer and the wedding was just lovely but we can't afford this new caterers pricing and its not right to price gouge brides.  We were so disappointed and simply cannot afford nearly $100K on our wedding.  Plus the girl who toured us was quite rude and condescending.  Is there any other venue in Boston like the Boston Public Library?

Re: Boston Public Library

  • The wang theatre - now citicenter I believe has weddings in both the upper and lower lobby. The lower lobby is dark paneling, the upper is the main lobby - very ornate and beautiful. You can use any caterer you wish, and the venue fee is reasonable. There is also the Museum of Science which is less formal but an interesting vibe.
  •  Can you not bring in your own caterer?

  • BPL won't let you bring in your own caterer. The old caterer was Sebastian's. Just FYI, MOS also has an exclusive caterer (Wolfgang Puck).

I've heard that the Gardner Museum is starting to do weddings and that would be *gorgeous*. I'm not sure who does the catering or if you can bring in your own, but it's definitely unique.
  • I was at the Gardner museum last Monday.  Sadly, they don't do weddings :(

Oh they don't? Rats. :(  That would be so awesome to have a wedding there.

ETA: Just thought of the Aquarium... I know there are a couple of girls planning their weddings at the Aquarium, so they would have better info on pricing and catering choices.

ETA2: http://exchangeconferencecenter.com/# I know some of the girls in the past have had their weddings here.
  • The MFA is doing weddings now, not sure of the caterer situation. Symphony Hall allows weddingd-a very grand entrance etc althought the event space is not so spectacular. ( alot like the lower level room at the BPL) The cycloramia also allows you to bring in your own caterer but the space is really huge- more of an industrial vibe than ornate like the BPL. Check out the wang- it seems weird at first but empty of theatre goers the space is really very beautiful and offers alot of options. The lowerlobby looks like a private club- warm and cozy. Biggest issue is booking around shows.
  • I'm not sure aspects draw you to BPL but I'm having my wedding in August at the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center and I think it has so much charm and it's such an unexpected venue. It's really reasonably priced and you can bring in your own caterer and alcohol!  Their site is www.cmacusa.org. They have some great pics on their Facebook page.
  • We are also getting married at the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center and loved it because it was very unique and also affordable for a "city" wedding.  It was just named the hidden gem of Boston wedding venues in the Globe-definitely check it out!
  • I'm getting married at the MOS, and yes it is catered by Wolfgang Puck exclusively.  OP, let me know if you have any questions.

Or check them out yourself, Cheryl the sales coordinator and Keith the Catering Manager are super nice and great to talk to.
