Do these things go together?? Opinions please!!

My fiancee just proposed on Saturday (!) and we're thinking of getting married sometime in the Fall of 2013.  I'm kind of crazy when it comes to planning and details, so I have a million things going on in my head right now for reception themes.  We orginally bonded over the T.V. show "Firefly" so I want to incorporate that into the reception, but not in a totally geeky way.  (A little geek is fine though!)

I like navy blue and yellow.  What do you think of having a firefly (the bugs, not the show) theme with sunflowers?  Do they go together?  Is it acceptable for fall?  I know fireflies come out in the summer, so that's why I'm not totally sure it'll work for fall.  I guess it depends on the date we pick?

I've been engaged for 2 days and am already freaking out.  Any opinions would be totally helpful!  Thanks!!!

  • What are you thinking in the way of the firefly? The navy and yellow I think would work great, and sunflowers would make great table decorations, maybe you could have place cards with fireflies on them or shaped that way?

    p.s I love the show :)
  • Agree with all the suggestions above. Love the colors too.

  • first: CALM DOWN.

second: your colors, themes etc.. do not have to match the season so do whatever you want.

before you start choosing themes, colors etc... set a date and reserve the date. that way the  more important (and maybe tough to do later things) are taken care of. THEN work on that.

most important and to do before all: figure out your budget.

  • Thanks, alithebride!   I just need to remember to breathe.

I have a place in mind, but I can't get ahold of them, so I figured I'd work on the stuff I can control while I wait.  My plan is to call our parents tonight to see what they would like to contribute.  His parents are more affluent than mine, so I have a feeling that they will be helping more than what traditon dictates.

I think all of you here on theknot are going to be my new best friends!

I think it's great that you and your FI bonded over the show. H and I had the same experience from watching Lost together. At first I wanted to somehow incorporate some elements of the show very subtly into the reception somewhere but we eventually nixed the idea. It just didn't make sense based on other things we decided on which were more important.

Incorporating fireflies in different places is a cute idea, but I agree that it doesn't make me think of the show necessarily. Do you only want a little hint that nods to the show? Do you want other people don't have to understand the reference? As long the fireflies look good and make sense with everything else you're doing, I think that fireflies, sunflowers and navy blue would be lovely together.

p.s. I just started watching that show this weekend with H. We've been enjoying it a lot. We just watched the "Shindig" episode too.

  • I didn't want it to be super obvious.  Just something that he and I would get, and if anyone else picked up on it, then good for them.  It's not like he's dressing up as Mal...although I do tell him that Malcolm Reynolds is my number one boyfriend and he's my number two.  But he's ok with that.  I'm thinking of having the centerpieces be mason jars with fake fireflies in them and having Firefly sweet tea vodka and lemonade as a signature drink.  I guess I just want the name to be there, to represent.

i hope you're joking. you dont call and ask them how much they want to contribute. assume you and FI will foot the bill yourselves. if they OFFER to contribute-great. if not then you're ok. dont assume they'lll follow an outdated tradition that no longer applies.

I'm in shock that so many people answered your original question after you posted this.

This is not okay in any situation. It is selfish and greedy. "Hi mom and dad. We're engaged! We really appreicate the love and support you have shown us over the past 5 years, but we would appreicate your money a whole lot more."

Enjoy being engaged, enjoy your FI. Sit down together and figure out a budget that the two of you can afford... if that means planning a wedding 2 years out, then do it. Please do not EXPECT anyone to foot the bill for YOUR wedding.
  • I guess I should make myself clear.  It's not like I sprung it on my parents by asking them for money.  Before we were even engaged, but we all knew it was coming, my parents said that they would be more than happy to help us out.  They threw it out there without my saying anything.  We never talked specifics then, so I wanted to get an idea of what they had in mind.  While, yes, I'm ASSUMING that his parents will contribute, it's not like I'm banking on them to pay for everything that my parents don't.

I'm sorry I offended everyone in my previous post.  I suppose I left some stuff out that didn't seem important to put in writing.

  • Congratulations on your engagement and your idea sounds great. One thing you may want to think of though is if you are going to do real flowers sunflowers may be higher or hard to find in the fall so depending on your budget you may have trouble.

Thanks!  I didn't even consider that!  I may be changing flowers...

  • I know I'm a little late, but another way you could incorporate fireflies is by using fairy lights. They are tiny lights that randomly blink or twinkle. I saw them online somewhere and the effect reminded me of fireflies.

MY opinion of firefly theme? I don't particularly care for it. Seems kind of juvenile. Do the navy blue & yellow, nix the fireflies. Perhaps you can possibly also add some sunflowers into your centerpieces- that would look nice.

[QUOTE]Please don't ask your parents for money.  The tradition of parents paying went out the window when couples stopped being married straight from their parents' homes. It's really inappropriate for adult children to ask their parents to pay.  It's fine to accept contributions if they offer - but please wait until they do.  If they don't, be prepared to foot the bill yourselves. Be aware, also that money almost always comes with strings attached.  <strong>You will also surrender some control of the wedding planning if you accept someone else's money.

This. My wedding is not mine & my fiance's wedding- it is my parents wedding.
