Passport Info?

I've never applied for a passport before and am kind of lost as to what to do. I looked on the passport page online...but I'm still confused. What is the difference between a travel book and a travel card? Can I just use the cheaper option of a travel card if traveling to the Dominican Republic? Where do I go to apply for a passport? Since I haven't done this before, I have to do it in person.

Any suggestions/tips?

Re: Passport Info?

  • From my understanding a travel card is to be used just for that trip and the book is for multiple trips. You can go to your local usps and fill out the application and pay 135 dollars. You can also go to Tripple A travel center and get it and also take your pic. If my info is incorrect im sure the post office can explain. Hth
  • The passport card is for limited travel. You can cross the border into Canada or Mexico with it...and I think it does not allow for air travel. I also think you can use it on a cruise. To fly to the DR, you'll need a passport. BUT I believe that if you have your passport in your maiden name for less than a year , you can change it to your married name for free. They only process passports in certain cities so the post office will take your application and send it off for you. Check online to make sure yours does this because when I applied a few years back I discovered the post office closest to me didn't take passport applications. I got my passport pics taken at Walgreens but I think the post office will do that too if you want them to. They told me it would take three months to get it in the mail but it showed up exactly one month from my application date. Have a great weekend!

  • passport card: land or sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, Caribbean Passport book: ALL air travel and if you somehow travel via land or sea to other countries The card is supposed to make it easier and cheaper if you often head to border countries.

  • You cannot use the card if you are flying. The book is a regular passport and can be used for any international travel. It may seem expensive, but it is valid for 10 years.

  • I didn't even know they offered a passport card. I have the book I got from local post office. I also cannot wait to really use it and get some stamps lol
  • I didn't know about it either until my FI had to apply for his passport, I got mine a long time ago. Seems convenient, carrying my passport around always makes me nervous!

  • I think you need a book to fly to another country.  You can apply for it at the post office.

  • We both got our passports for work a few years ago, so mine was helped along by our travel service.  But, it was a rush one, so I ended up going to the passport office in Mpls and getting it within 5 days.  I think you may be able to go to a license bureau as well to get your photo done and send in the application.
