  • We stayed at the Conrad Condado both times we went. It's very nice. We got a lagoon side view the first and ocean view the 2nd. Loved them both. They have 4 pools I believe including a saltwater pool and a pool with a swim up bar. Service is excellent. Location is great. They also have their own private beach on the lagoon which is really cool and it's within walking distance of the bigger (public) condado beach which is nice. Also is attached to an Enterprise which if you plan on renting a car I would HIGHLY recomemend going there.

Food--try everything. PR has the most amazing food. Check out: Cafe La Princesa (outdoors, super cute/romantic, live music, delicious food), Rum Jam (go on Monday night..half off food. Very modern, unique and delicious), Parrot Club (try the signature drink), and Waikiki which is between the Conrad and La Concha is really good too. If you like fish, PR is a great place to try some. Also I am now addicted to plantains.

Nightlife--go to Old San Juan on a Friday or Saturday night. It is mostly dead there at night on the weekdays but the weekends are pretty crazy. There are lots of really cool hole in the wall places that you should discover on your own. El Batey is awesome. If you like beer I would recommend getting into their Medillas pretty quick. They are super cheap and you can pick some up at the local convience store and save yourself a lot of money.

There are also some decent bars on Ashford Ave (which is the main road of the Condado district). Walk around sometime and explore. I think we went to a random place on a Monday night and they had a great big band playing.

Adventures--El Yunque is awesome, we went their both times. First we had a half day guided tour and then we went back on our own and hiked. We did a catamaran snorkeling trip and loved it. The biobay is pretty fantastic also. The forts are realllllly cool/pretty and only cost like $3 to get in.

General advice--Puerto Rico is seriously an awesome place to just walk around and discover stuff. We walked to Old San Juan serveral times instead of taking a taxi (like an hour walk) but it was worth it just because you get to see different views, etc.  Taxis are a good way to get to OSJ..if they offer you a deal take it. Usually the trip is like $14 though. The bus is much cheaper ($.75) but usually you have to wait a while to catch it. Explore and have fun. Old San Juan is fantastic..make sure you check it out during the day and at night.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Puerto Rico is awesome..I'm jealous!

  • We stayed at a resort in Rio Grande.  It was about a 30 minute drive from Old San Juan, on the beach, and just a few miles from El Yunque rainforest.

Here is the website for where we stayed - http://www.wyndhamriomar.com/. We loved it.  It was not all-inclusive, and the food was kind of pricey (but delicious!)  We saved a lot of money on drinks by stocking up on beer, some liquor, and mixers at a grocery store in town and bringing it back to our room.

Make sure to spend some time in Old San Juan and visit the San Cristobal fort!
  • Don't stay in San Juan.  To really feel PR and appreciate it, IMO you need to go to Old San Juan and other places along the coastlines.  El Yunque is really cool.  Bio Bay is amazing!  Check out the little local bars and restaurants.  Near Luquillo is a stretch of little sheds (?) that several all different types of food.  It was great walking from one to another andtrying everything.

I second El Yunque and the Bioluminescent Bay. Both are do-not-miss sites. We also ventured to El Hamburguer (its one of those places that all the locals know about) - it was full of locals, off the beaten path, and had REALLY delicious cheeseburgers!

Explore Old San Juan. It's beautiful, unique, and fun, with lots of picture opportunities.  The forts are practically free to explore (I think its like $5 or something.)

Ditto what PP said about the bus. We took the bus multiple times (including to El Hamburguer!) and it's much cheaper and more dependable than cabs.

Have some empanadas from street vendors. You will not regret it.

    Have fun!!!!
  • We stayed at the Caribe Hilton when we were there a few years ago and loved it. Great resort, great location, nice rooms, and we loved the swim up bar and outdoor grill restaurant.

Quick trip to the airport, downtown, and the cruise piers.
  • We go to PR every summer and we LOVE it.  We always stay on the west coast, it's very relaxed and we love the beaches there.  We love the little town of Rincon, it's not very fancy but has a great vibe and really good food.  There are many places to stay, but try to find something on the beach, you won't regret it.  It is very easy to travel to PR, but you might want to avoid San Juan during the work week, trafic can be VERY bad.  If you are planning on staying on the west coast there is an airport there in Aguadilla which also has rental car companies.

    Good luck and enjoy :)
  • Thank you everyone for all the replies! It helps so much getting 1st hand knowledge from those who have been there. It sounds like we'll have a great honeymoon no matter what we do!
