Buyer Beware!!

There is a new trend these days with vendors called "vendor shoots"  What they are is a florist, hair & make up person, bridal salon and venue all get together and put together a photoshoot with a veteran photographer and several new/would be photographers to make photos for their portfolios.  These shoots are great for learning, but can be extremely deceptive to those trying a assess these vendors portfolios as they are created without the stress of an actual wedding day and under the direction of a much more experienced vendor with high end dresses and accessories. The veteran vendor generally charges the newbies to be there and they set up all the lighting (newbies don't even have it to recreate the images at your event), the hair & make up person can take three hours to work on the subject instead of the usually 30 minutes they will have available on an actual wedding and the dresses are extreme high end with models  or model like bride's wearing them wearing them. The venue used is empty, yes no pushy guests or caterers rushing everyone along and huge lighting strobes are generally set up that would be not very practical to use on an actual wedding day since they are very intrusive and need several people to hold down if used outside.  The problem with these conditions is the newbie photographer will leave with a bunch of great photos that really won't represent at all what the actual bride will get on her wedding day, but more what one would find in a bridal magazine!!  So if you see your photographer or hair & make person etc blogging about these shoots, then great, they are continuing their education, but don't count these photos as part of their portfolios. Even professional competitions don't allow them to be submitted!!  SO ask and buyer beware!

This is quite detailed...and a tad strange. Have you been to one of these photoshoots?  you seem to know alot about this.

Not strange at all. I haven't actually been to one but I just read an editorial about this situation on a photographer's Facebook blog, complaining that this was happening in their "competition" world, but have personally been reading about these shoots on blogs everywhere. I've seen big lights set up that you could never and should never use at a wedding. I've seen photos come out of them that aren't very consistent with the other work on the blog and then wham that photo is on the front page of their website.  It's like the photo of the Biggy Burger you see on the fastfood menu they took three hours to prepare with a huge photo crew & big $$ that burger for the photo, but what get you actually for your $3.59 isn't going to look the same.

Idk..I don't think it's a big deal. The vendor that comes to mind after reading this is Carla Ten Ecyk. Love her work and her blog but she wasn't in my budget. I know she holds workshops and things and if I recall one blog post she organized something like this with different vendors. Looking at the vendors, there were many reputable companies, ones who get some buzz on the boards. Anybody looking at the photos can tell it wasn't a real wedding.

Are the above links the kinda thing you are referring to? Personally, unless a photographer is claiming the photos they took at this workshop was a wedding he shot, I don't think there is any foul play. Some of our favorite people helped out at the shoot too- Jane, White Dress by the Shore, Vantage Films. I think these workshops are more of an opportunity for vendors with a good working relationship to get together and help each other's business grow. It's quite nice actually. I'm not really getting how it's deceitful.

I'm not sure who that is or haven't seen the photos but, I still wouldn't discredit the work.  If their portfolio was only based on these type of pictures then maybe I would probably ask for other pictures to see.  I've modeled for things before where vendors have collaborated on something but, I don't know if that is different from an actual workshop. I've also been in shoots and shows where the girls working on me are knocking out a bunch of girls in a short period of time and the pictures still looked amazing.  I would just say you never know what goes on behind the scenes.

FYI, I remember weddingfairy being on the boards when I first came on early 2009.  They were trying to do a very thorough job of telling people that HK Photography was not reputable or experienced enough, etc, etc, etc.  HK Photography may not have been in the business for 20 years, but they are in very high regard on the CT board.  I think people chose to make their own decision rather than listen to one person's remarks.  They like to give a lot of criticism.  I remember quite a few knotties telling this person to basically disappear or they would be reported... AND... if my memory serves me right, this person also admitted that they worked in the industry or had some connection, which is why so many people were upset.  They seem to go away for a while, and then return to stir the pot... probably once they think no one will remember them.
