June 2013 Weddings

Someone tell me about flowers..? Before I go insane from boredom.

Ohmygosh, I'm going to go out of my mind today. I have to work super late. But only because I have a meeting that doesn't start until 6:30, which is just craziness. I have nothing really to do all day. So far I proof read and emailed in a grad school paper, watched an episode of SYTTD, spent about an hour putting together a presentation for Thursday and for the last maybe two hours I've been listening to recorded grad school lectures. I can't go home between work ending at 5 and my meeting because I live half an hour away, so the extra hour of driving just isn't worth it. In fact, yesterday was the only day this week I'm not working stupidly late. But because my agency is non profit, anything worked outside of business hours we're required to take off/flex into our schedules. I'm hoping the only upside is working enough overtime to take all day next Friday off. Fingers crossed, haha.

Anyways, I'm clearly horridly bored. Someone talk wedding-y things with me. Tell me about flowers... I don't know how much flowers costs. What's the going rate for various bouquets- BM, bride, bouts,  etc. For those of you using fake flowers, are they really cheaper? I know high quality ones are sometimes more expensive.

  • Sorry you are bored! I have not researched the flowers at all - I know I want to have real once, but that's as far as I've gone so far. So no help here! But I'll be lurking on this post to see what the other brides suggest. :)

  • I feel your pain...I put off all of these boring yet time-consuming work tasks last week, and now I really need to get them done, but I have ZERO motivation.

Okay, so, flowers...I don't know much about flowers, but depending on what you're looking for, the really nice fake ones are definitely more expensive than some of the real stuff. We'e not hiring a florist, per se, but one of my mom's friends works at a floral shop and is getting us into a couple of the wholesalers around here so we can buy/arrange them ourselves. We're supposed to go on a flower reconaissance mission to the wholesalers on Saturday to get an idea of what will be available next June and what it will cost, but really, I don't know what would even be considered a reasonable price.

Speaking of flowers, originally I wanted to do a brooch bouquet because I love sparkly stuff (and what's more sparkly than a bunch of rhinestone brooches?). But holy eff, brooches are EXPENSIVE!! Even the ones at vintage stores are like $5 and up. I've gone from doing a full brooch bouquet to just incorporating some of them into regular flowers so my bouquet has some sparkle going on.

  • Emily- love the idea of adding sparkle to your bouquet, I def wanna do that too.

As far as flowers, I am not 100% sure on cost yet either, and havn't met with any florists yet to discuss. We budgeted $3000 for centerpieces, bouquets, etc, but in talking to people they basically told me I am dreaming if I think it will only be $3000. Keep in mind though, I live in NY (Long Island) and everything is more expensive here. I mean everything. I read about you girls and how much you are spending on venues, and I can't believe what i am paying. I didn't even go with one that would be considered "most expensive," ours in an average price sonsidering places around here. It includes set up and everything, it's a venue on the water with huge glass windows, includes all the food (and it is a LOT of food), our cake, cocktail hour and reception, bridal suite and bridal attendant, lighting, and open bar. It will cost us about $30,000. With no flowers, DJ, Photo, video, favors, limos, etc. My parents are paying the $30,000, and FI and I are paying the rest. He is super stressed about paying for it, and would be totally happy with 0 flowers, but I love flowers so we will have them. Just going to scale back center pieces and use something simple.

To save $, we are going to go with blooms that are in season in June so nothing is special order, and fuller blooms so we can use less. Short centerpieces as well. And we have a friend in the business who will hopefully help us cut costs. But I am really nervous about shopping for flowers because I feel like I'm in for a rude awakening. :(

  • I'm getting married in Upstate NY (Geneva, to be exact). Our venue is right on the water too. It's on Seneca Lake. It includes a lot as well... tables and chairs, food, open bar, cocktail hour, basic linens in white or black (we wont be splurging for custom colors), a honeymoon suite the night of, a holding room for us ladies to get ready in, and some basic decor elements like vases and votive holders, but we have to provide the fillings and fluff for them. It's going to run maybe 12K-ish. I can't imagine spending 30K. That's more than me whole wedding will cost. But LI is crazy expensive. I've been there a few times and I'm always blown away by the prices of things.

  • I had a friend who ordered her flowers in bulk from Sam's Club and made her own bouquets.

I am also in the process of figuring out how much I'm willing to spend. I've thrown around the idea of making my own bouts and having a florist do the bouquets. I need to call a lady that does it out of her house in the town I'm getting married in and a floral shop where I live to compare. I really don't want to spend over $150 on flowers...it's not a top priority to me.
  • Oh flowers!  I cannot understand why they cost so much.  We found a florist who has very economical prices at the bridal show we went to a few months ago, so I will not be trying to do them  myself as I had thought about.  Our plan so far is for my bouquet, three for BM's, two corsages for mothers and one for my aunt who is doing a reading, and eight bouts, all this for under $400. I am beyond thrilled.  Our centerpieces are non-floral, so that helps too.

  • A large flower store around here does a yearly flower bridal show for free. I went back in March and it was one of the most helpful things with planning so far. At the show I went to they had bridal bouquets from around 90-200, bridesmaids bouqets were around 50, bouts were 7-12 a piece, the corsages for moms were around 20, centerpieces ranged from like 40 a table to 200 a table. I am just trying to keep my overall flower total under $2000.

  • 2-3K on flowers that will just be thrown out at the end of the night seems ridiculous to me. Though, I guess that can be said for all aspects of a wedding really. I'm thinking I'm going to buy fake flowers in bulk at this point. My mom has a friend who was a professional florist for like 10 years and has offered to to do the arrangements for me so long as I provide the actual materials. I'm selfish and as long as I have real flowers, everyone else doesn't matter, haha.

  • I completely agree- Flowers do seem like the biggest waste of money but I love how they look in pictures haha. I really dont want to throw mine out at the end of the night and think I may arrange for someone to drop them off at a nursing home or something the next day.
