Getting in Shape

Trying to get in shape... motivation needed!

Hey peeps.  I've never posted on this board before.
My wedding is in August and I'm working on getting in shape.
I live in Alaska and I always gain weight over the winter!  I really want to lose what I've gained and tone it all up!
Now that it's above 0, I'm starting to run outside again!!  still hurts though... or maybe I'm just a baby.
I really don't want to join a gym. I go with FI to the gym on post when i can,but I feel like I can do this without a gym!
I did crossfit last year and liked it, so I may  follow those workouts again.
What's everyone doing to get in shape?
Gym or no gym?
I really need to stay motivated!!

Re: Trying to get in shape... motivation needed!

  • Welcome to the board! Post in and get motivated by the Accountability boards. We are all in the same boat. I've heard CrossFit is a great workout. I go to the gym because I love classes and I work out with a trainer. I am someone that needs someone else telling me what to do. When I first started going to the gym, I was aimless, using machines incorrectly and spending an hour on the treadmill. I would never manage doing an at home workout.
  • Welcome kelty!

I live up north too, and I use the awesome winter weather to ski, snowshoe and snowmobile. When I'm not doing that, I do workout at home. I have an elliptical and do either free weights or dvds to fill in the gaps.

Hang out on accountability (all awesome peeps there), and use a site like MFP.

This is a supportive place to be.

  • Hi Kelty,

My cousin lives in Alaska and just posted some facebook pictures of her standing in waist deep snow.  So not jealous!

As for exercise, I mostly run.  I am training for my first half marathon right now.  That is keeping me pretty motivated because I know if I skip any of my runs, I will fall behind on my training plan, fail at the half marathon and have wasted money on the entry fee.  So that is what gets me out the door when am lacking energy, but for the most part I love running.

I also do strength training a couple days a week.  I either go to the gym (my apartment complex has one that is free) or do P90X at home.  I think you can definitely get in shape without a gym membership.

MFP and the accountability threads are great for keeping me on track too!

  • I will also say join myfitnesspal.com and participate in daily accountability here!

I personally do as many different things as possible to keep myself interested and motivated. I do go to the gym a lot right now, but that's mostly because it's winter. I use cardio equipment (Elliptical, Stairmaster, Stationary bike, Treadmill), I weight lift (free weights, classes, machines), and I do classes (Body Combat and Body Pump mostly). When it's nicer out I play disk golf, go on walks (soon to be runs, I'll be training for my first 5K when the weather improves) and ride my bike.

I guess I don't exercise at home very much - I find physically going somewhere tends to motivate me more than if I'm around all the food and laziness of home.

  • Hi and welcome!

I also suggest MFP (or another similar site/app) and the accountability threads. I'm a gym rat, to answer your question, and won't run outside until it's over 50* (is a wimp). I run like 6 days a week, try to get to spinning once or twice a week, lift, row, whatever strikes my fancy. I'm running three triathlons this year though, so I need to get my booty in a pool soon so I don't drown.

But since you like to run, I will suggest, which is my main tactic for motivation, is to sign up for races well in advance. Then you have something to train for. I signed up for my first 2013 race back in December and have already added two more and am probably going add at least another two. So I've had things to have to work towards for months already, which is a huge motivator for me.

  • Hello kelty!

Welcome! I'm new on these boards as well... for fitness, I've always been really intimidated by weight lifting, the gym etc but I bought a number of at-home workout videos and have been using workouts from Women's Health and other fitness magazines and have slowly been getting stronger and upping the weight I'm using... I've joined a gym and will be trying out my new-found skills there soon! I've also been using MFP to tracking food, workouts etc.

My favourite thing to do has been sports - I've played ultimate frisbee, dodgeball and soccer over the past few years. I'm not the best on the field, but I find it much more fun and motivating to be involved in a sport with a team... plus, if I'm running to keep up with someone on defence or catch a point, I find I push myself much harder than I would on my own!
  • Hello all!  I, too, will log into the accountsbility threads!  Right now, I am using the Atkin's diet. Shockingly one diet I;ve nver tried. And I work out pretty much everyday.  I try to throw in a second workout at home on my stationary bike!  It has the handles the give resistance forward and back and I SWEAT!!!

The dress I am romancing has be thinking I need to get back down to my birth weight! LOL!
  • speaking of waist deep snow!! lol

Thanks for the WARM welcome!  (ha I just made myself laugh!)  but really, the winters up here are sooo long and towards the end I get unmotivated...
last year I did crossfit and liked it, saw results, but some say it's too hard on the body and can be damaging over time?
but then again I was a dancer and my knees, at 24, already suck!
During the winter we snowmobile (but it's called snowmachining up here, werid, right?!) and I learned to x-country ski (it's definitely a wrk out!) and over the summer me and Fi ... or FI and I (trying to be grammatically correct) go rock climbing and hiking.  But I have goals set for myself, like I want to do a triathlon (I'm really bad at riding a bike, yeah I know you're thinking it's not hard, and FI was surprised my inability to do so. ) or eventally a full marathon!

FI and I also want to do a tough mudder and you have to be like SUPER SUPER in shape... or you die... ok maybe not die, but definitely won't make it...

AND then I worry about losing too much!! so how do you maintain once you get to where you want to be?!

OH and sorry I took so long to write back!  I work 4-10s and I usually don't hop on the internet that often!
