How far ahead did you book honeymoon?

We're exactly a year out, and have just really begun investigating options. Wondering if there's a certain deadline we should plan to book by. Really have no idea where we'll go or what we'll do yet. Also, we may have limited time off.

Re: How far ahead did you book honeymoon?

  • I think anywhere from one year to six months out works, but a lot depends on where you are going. I have been married twice and both times I booked quite far out because I chose to stay at resorts that have a limited number of rooms. In fact, the one resort  stayed at for my HM last month only has six rooms! One place I stayed at for my first HM only had around 40 rooms, as does another place I stayed at durng this last HM. Also, it depends on where you are going. I HMed in French Polynesia the first time and if you are going during their high season (July/August/September), smaller or more popular resorts will begin to sell out 6 months in advance. If a hotel isn't sold out, I can guarantee the room categories left will be limited. So, I recommend figuring out where you want to go, start researching pricing and hotels, and see where that research leads you!

  • We booked about ten months out because we kept an eye on the resort we wanted and started to see that the rooms were going pretty quick. Honestly it scared us, so we went ahead and booked it.

  • We're leaving for our HM Nov.5th, and we booked ours in April.  The HM was one of the most important things to us, since we hardly ever vacation anywhere fancy, so once we found the perfect resort, we got ahold of the agent and booked.  When the rates went down, and the resort offered extra resort credit, our agent made the changes and we saved money.

  • Really depends on what you want to do.

We reserved 3 nights worth of lodging;  the other 7 nights we figured out the day of that particular night.

I would have prefered to reserve all the nights' rooms, but my H said that we don't want to be forced into a schedule in an area we do not know.  So we wung (winged?) it!
  • We booked ours about 5 months out because that is when we got the money. :-) I had planned and priced everything out far ahead of time and prices hadn't changed much in that time.

It also depends on where you are going. We went to Europe and we might have done a little better had we booked 2/3 months earlier. But, if you are going in the states it might be about the same price up until 3-4 months ahead of time. Just keep doing research and decide on a price you feel comfortable with. Most airlines don't release dates until about 9 months ahead of time though.

  • We booked our room 9 months out.  One of the places we went  only 10 rooms, so we had to book early.    We did airfare and other hotel rooms 3-4 months out.   Although I wish we booked the Paris one earlier.  There was a city wide convention so it took longer to find a place.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • We booked ours 7 months out. We had found the  hotels we liked and then I held out for cheaper airfare to pull the trigger.  I set a kayak alert and when I noticed a trend of going down and saw a reasonable airfare price that we were comfortable with- we booked. We saved about $300 a ticket based on our initial quote from nyc to hawaii.

    Hope that helps!

  • We bought our plane tickets about a month a half ago because the price was just so cheap (they are up $200 now so I'm glad I bought them when I did). And we booked our resort about 3 weeks/4weeks ago. We had to do some investigating to see which resort was in our price range and which ones took FI's dad points. We found one we could afford and didn't look sketchy and went with that one haha!
