DJ or Jukebox???

I got an email from this one company and they mentioned a jukebox could be rented for a reception vs a DJ. Has anyone done this or seen it done? I'm just debating what my options are and costs.

I know of a couple that just used an iPod for the music at their wedding & reception, however I wasn't there so I don't know how it went over.

To me a DJ is important because they also 'liven up the party' and try to get guests involved etc.

I also have only heard of iPod and not Jukebox - Would guests be able to request/play songs then?

Personally I like someone being in charge of music.. I would worry that someone would steal my iPod or computer or that I would screw it up somehow. When I researched DJs something I found unique to them is their ability to read crowds. A good/talented DJ can read the crowd and see what songs are a hit and which one clear the dance floor. I would have no idea what to play... I know what I like to jam to but I am 1 of 275 ppl.

Yeah, a jukebox could be a cool addition to a DJ, but I wouldn't replace one for the other. I assume it would work just like the ones in bars and restaurants, where people would be able to continuously go up and pick out music. Question is, would you be able to set a default playlist in absence of requests, or would it be entirely dependent on requests? If it's the latter, I would highly suggest against it for two reasons

A) If someone doesn't go request a song at the right time, you'll end up with zero music.

Do you really trust your guests to pick the playlist? What floats one person's boat may wildly offend half your guest list. DJs can sense that and approve or deny requests accordingly. A jukebox can't.

If I had to pick between the 2, I'd pick the DJ. I think that there is too much that could go wrong with the box to be worth it. It would be harder to monitor than an ipod or laptop because instinctively feel that jukebox=audience involvement. How much would you actually save with the jukebox? A DJ like neon express will give you 8 hours of music for $250, which isn't bad and you get an experienced MC.

Jukebox would be cool for a reception where there is no dance, but if you are having one I would probably go with a DJ.

These are good thoughts. You can create a play list so the music would continue. The problem with DJs is I know of too many who would still play the inappropriate requests anyways so I feel like it's a lose-lose. I haven't found a DJ I can afford and like so the jukebox was a big plus with it only being $300 for the night.
