half marathons

For those that completed half/full marathons, how was your experience during a half? I'm thinking more and more of completing on later this year.

Re: half marathons

  • I chose to run the Disney Princess Half Marathon for my first HM, and I'm really glad I did. It was nice to have the people cheering me on and all of the characters along the way provided a nice distraction. Plus, they were really good at keeping the water/powerade stations well-stocked. I'll be running the Disney Wine & Dine HM this Fall.

  • I've done two. And I didn't train as much as I probably should have, but I finished in 2:14 (1st HM) and 2:05 (2nd HM.) They were only about six weeks apart.

During them (especially the first) I was cursing myself for signing up. But, after I finished I was glad I did. After the first one I was pretty sore.

I also walked a few times during both. I did the whole.. I'll start running again after that light pole. Then I'd get there and think, actually that light pole. Haha.

Train & Do it! Good Luck!

  • Definitely research some training plans.  Runners World and Hal Higdon have some good ones.  Make sure you incorporate strength training and cross training into your schedule.  I think I only ran like 3 days a week training for half marathons, and for the full marathon I ran 4 days a week.  You don't want to run everyday or you will get overtraining injuries like (shin splints, stress fractures, plantar fasciitis).

Make sure you get properly fitted for running shoes at a running specialty store.  They asses your gait, your foot, and your footstrike and make sure that you end up in a pair of shoes that works with how YOU run.

If you put in the training and preperation, you will be ok on race day.  I had a hard time with my full marathon as soon as the sun came out since I trained over the winter, but all the hours and miles I put in really kept me going.

Good luck, and if you have any other questions feel free to PM me :)
  • I ran the Chicago Half Marathon in Sept' 09 and it was the most amazing experience.  Like PP said, I expected this AMAZING fall weather but it was just hot as hell...but at the end it was so worth it.  I did not give myself the option to stop or walk except at the water stations.  I say go for it...you will never regret it.

  • I have done 2, and LOVED them both....Just make sure you are running it for yourself...because half-way through you may question yourself...lol   Best of luck!! Also, if you run with someone-- do NOT let them talk you into running a full marathon (yes, this happened to me)...LOL

  • I've also done two and I'm hooked. The first one I did was a small local race. There were around 500 runners, it was through local neighborhoods, and there was ZERO crowd support. By mile 10, I just wanted to quit. I was alone on a windy, curvy, hilly road in some neighborhood. I gave in to the walking bug and walked some of it. Finished that one in 2:05

I just did my second one last weekend - the NYC Half. I LOVED every second of that race. Tons of crowd support, 15000 runners so I was never alone on the course - it was great and I ran the entire way.

As far as training, I used different plans by Hal Higdon. For the first one, I ran 3 days a week, and for the last one I mostly did 4 days a week but didn't worry the few weeks I couldn't get a 4th run in.

  • I've done 7 HM and one full. The half is by far my favorite race distance. After the first one, I was addicted. :)
  • thank you all for fantastic responses! :)
