Cakes that dont cost a fortune?

Hi ladies, got a quote from an allergy-free bakery for our wedding cake for 250 people and i was quoted $1400. SLIGHTLY above my budget. What other options do we have? I'm still planning on getting my top tier from this place but i'm open to suggestions on the other stuff. I just cant justify spending that much on desert!

So, if you got yummy cake that didnt cost an arm and a leg, PLEASE let me know where! I'm open to cupcakes too.

Well I don't have any suggestions for you...I'm just curious --- how and why would you buy the top tier from one bakery and the rest from another?
  • edited December 2011
I have heard a good money saver is do the top tier like you said so you can do the cake cutting then you can have the rest not be real cake. Then you can do sheet cakes from the same bakery.

Try Julia's Bakery. Reasonable prices and the cake was yummy!

We did ice cream cake! Two sheet cakes (and we ended up with an entire sheek cake extra) and a small heartshaped cake that we cut. I'd post a pic but it never works for me sorry. Total for the three cakes was $150

im sorry i wasnt really clear in my original post. i have celiac disease and so if i want to eat cake at our wedding, we must get the top tier from a bakery that is safe for me...which is the one who's whole cake would be 1400. yikes.

ill definitely check out julias. and i think sheet cakes would work...just not from this place. they werent much cheaper. any others suggestions, my amazing CT knotties?

I don't know which bakery you went to but "Dee's One Smart Cookie" in Glastonbury is a Gluten Free bakery and I know they do cakes.

Sweet Designs in Milford was going to do a no-sugar added tier for diabetic FI.  And her cakes were DEFINITELY less than $1400 for 250 people!!

yeah that's the one :) her cakes are AMAZING but we definitely cant afford a $1400 cake...as much as everyone, even my non-gluten-free family loves them more than "regular" cakes

Diane's Sweet Treats in Newington (she has a website - just Google her) is our cake lady and she's great on prices. Very reasonable, IMO.

We are going with Chimirris in Wethersfield.  Our cake is included in our package, but we got a quote from her for a grooms cake and it was very reasonable.  And their cakes are amazing!

The Sweet Spot in New Milford does gluten free baking.  I get her (Jolene is the owner and baker) gluten free cupcakes all the time and they are freaking fabulous!  She does vegan also, and I honestly can't tell the difference between her regular and her vegan.  I do know that she is now doing wedding cakes, but I haven't seen the finished product.  FI got me a mini cake for V-day that was covered in fondant, etc and it was adorable.  Jolene is a professionally trained baker though, so i can't imagine that they wouldn't be good.

She does bake regular cakes, but I know that she fully cleans her kitchen before making any gluten free items.  One of her employees actually has celiac disease, so I know she has high standards for her gluten free items.

Modern Pastry on Franklin Ave. in Hartford quoted our cake for 150 at $3 a slice.  Great service and friendly.  They've been open for yrs and have a great reputation.
