Wedding DJ's that don't suck

Hi everyone (I'm reposting here from the MN board):

I am having troubles with my wedding reception music. I hate wedding DJs, because they often play cheesy music that's the same at every wedding (YMCA, Chicken Dance, Unchained Melody, Brown Eyed Girl, Celebration, anything that you cringe and say ' kill me' when you hear it), and that is exactly what I don't want. My fiance and I both like a variety of known and lesser known music (indie, prog rock, jazz, etc) and only like a smaller selection of "pop" music. Because of that, we had my cousin (with an eclectic music taste) booked to DJ and rented a DIY DJ package with all the equipment (my cousin has some DJing experience, but not with weddings). Long story short, I don't think the cousin DJing thing is going to work out. I need to find a wedding DJ or alternative (I'd love a band, but they're so expensive) ASAP, and I would like one that isn't corny and won't play the usual overplayed wedding music. Can anyone recommend a good DJ in the Rochester/MSP area that is also budget-friendly?

Thanks in advance!

  • We selected Cookies and Cognac as our DJ for all of the reasons you listed no over the top DJ involvement...being in control of the music...no props...no cheese. They have been great to work with and I'm excited to have them DJ for us on Friday!
  • We used Midwest Sound and Light.  They have a music planner that you can use to help them get the right "vibe" for your event and you can specify things you absolutely do not want to play.  You can also specify how much interraction you want the DJ to have (ours was minimal - the party kept itself going without them having to try too hard!).  They have a really big collection of music and if you have a list of songs you want and they don't have it, they'll find it!
  • ditto whittyschaffy... we have had a great experience thus far with midwest sound!

  • I am from more northern MN so not sure about good DJs, but you can give the DJ a Do Not Play list.  That way the songs that you really don't like won't be played at all during the reception.

  • another ditto for Midwest sound. They were reasonable and they definitely don't play anything you don't want. They have a music planner in which they specifically ask about those songs as well as dj involvement.

  • Oh! and they travelled from MSP to La Crosse, so they would definitely do Rochester!

  • stclouddj.com has great DJs. I have personal experience with DJ Coop and Gimli. They've both been on the radio up here, DJed downtown a lot and many fraternity and sorority formals I've been to. I highly recommend them! I believe they will travel, but I'd contact them to be sure.
