Airbrush tan didn't go too well. Now what?

I'm getting married in 5 weeks (eek!).  I have fair skin, freckles, and work outside, so I have freckled tan lines that I need to blend with my white skin in order for my strapless dress to look good.  I found an airbrush tanning service that had great reviews on yelp and decided to go for a trial run last week.  The tanning lady was a bit perterbed as to what color to use on me, considering the difference in my skin tone depending on how much sun it gets.  So she does the spray and I follow all directions on how to take care of it.  Lo and behold, I felt like a total oompa-loompa for the past week, combined with looking like I had a skin disease when some parts faded before others!  My arms and shoulders were actually ok, but my stomach and legs looked ridiculously dark, to the point that I would have been embarrassed to wear a swimsuit, shorts, or skirt.

So now what?  The tanning lady did say that she could alter anything that I didn't like, but I don't want to spend $50 for ANOTHER trial, and then $50 the week of the wedding.  I could take a leap of faith, ask her to make it much lighter, and cross my fingers that I'll look ok on the most important day of my life.........or are there any alternatives?  How about the moisturizers that darken your skin over time?  How would I get my back evenly?  Any other advice?  Should I just bight the bullet and do a 2nd trial?  Ugh!

  • I would do the second trial. I like spray tans and have gotten LOTS done.... BUT... i've never found them to be consitent.

I was a tanning bed junky for about 4 years in high school and college and then after having a serious talk with my dermotogist I gave it up..... until i got engaged. I have been going for the past two months (and this is going to sound really vain) bc I knew it would be so much easier to take the cancer risk and have consistent color that I know how to manage. I'll quit again once my wedding is over this week, and I havn't even gone in a week.
If you are against that, there is jergen's gradual lotion. Have your FIance apply it for you nightly to your back.

  • Alternately, can you try going the other way?  Like, for me, a tan would fade pretty substantially in 5 weeks, so if I just wore lots and lots of heavy sunscreen whenever I was outside for the whole 5 weeks, the tan lines would fade away to my natural skin tone by then.

I use spf 100 everyday, and try to wear cover-up clothes and big hats, but there's always that "v" at my collar and my lower arms that get sun......so I will need something to blend those spots with my super white natural color.  Thanks for the advice so far!

  • Did you get airbrused by a technician, or a booth? I did a booth 2 weeks ago at their lightest color, and ended up terrible. I found a airbrush technician for less money, and did my trial yesterday. It looks so much better. Also check the salon. Some here have guarentees that will give you a gift card if you are unhappy.

I have also had great luck with Jenkins gradual tanning lotion. It smells good, and you put it on every night like regular lotion (sold at walmart with the regular lotions). As a fair/freckled/redhead, I used it nightly for around a week or 2 for a nice sunkissed even tan.

  • I would do a second trial. Ask for a different technician if you're afraid she won't listen to you this time.

I've had about a million spray tans and have only turned orange once - some turn out better than others, but with five weeks to try it out, I say go for another trial. Have them record exactly what formula they use so that if you do like it, they'll know what to do for the wedding.
  • Did they exfoliate you first? that can sometimes make a difference.

Try doing a sugar-scrub in the bath to get rid of the first layer of dead skin (salt can leave little cut marks).

Be glad you didn't do what i did for grad (ever so many years ago!) when I went to the tanning salon and they put me in for 20mins my first time...SUNBURN!!! luckily by the time grad came around the burn was gone, but i still had major farmer tan lines
