Hotel Blocks?? Help Please!!

I had my FI on "Hotel Duty" and he's completely given up. It seems that every hotel he called gave him the run around. They either told him to call the corporate offices or told him that we had to pay in advance for the rooms. I'd be tempted to let my guests "fend for themselves" as this is Orlando and there is no shortage of hotels, but the wedding is Thanksgiving weekend and I'd like to lock in some reasonable rates for them!

Does anyone here have a recommendation?
Have you blocked rooms for your out of town guests?
How is this supposed to work?

that's ridiculous. Either he's talking to the wrong hotels or he's not wording it right or he's talking to the wrong person.  Every hotel I talked to was willing to set aside a courtesy block for me.
    I talked to:
    Hilton in Altamonte Springs
    Embassy Suites in Altamonte Springs
    Sheraton Orlando North in Maitland

    I reserved with:
    Doubltree by Universal
    Portofino Bay at Universal

For each hotel, I went during the workweek when I was off of work and asked to speak to the group sales dept.  I told them I was getting married and when and that I'd like a courtesy block.  They reserved ten rooms at a special rate for me for only the night of the wedding. However, if guests wanted to, they could extend their stay at the same rate based on availability.  The rooms were no longer reserved at that rate one month before the wedding.  I didn't have to pay anything.  Every time I call to check on the room block, I have to call during m-f business hours to talk to the appropriate person because the people at the front desk don't handle room block reservations and they always tell you to call back when someone who does is available.

you shouldnt have any problems with booking blocks of rooms. i worked at a hotel- marriott actually for 2 years and we always were excited to block rooms for weddings.  i currently have blocked the residence inn by marriott ucf. Our wedding is by UCF and i know all the hotels in the area will help you out without any deposit or anything.

What area are you looking to have your guests stay?  I have a room block at the Westin in Lake Mary and they were wonderful to work with.  They reserved a block of 15 rooms for us.  I also spoke with the Marriott in Lake Mary and they were more than willing to help.  Neither place makes you pay anything up front and if you don't need all the rooms they set aside they just open them up to general reservations.

    Good luck!

    Thanks, Ladies!

I'll make some calls this afternoon. I have the feeling now that he either misunderstood what they told him, or was asking the wrong questions.

The wedding is at Leu Gardens, so I think the closest hotels would be in Downtown Orlando, but our guests will probably want to stay closer to the attractions since most of them have Kids.
