at home receptions

Hi all!  So tell me about your at home receptions.  My FMIL is having an AHR for us at their house but since there is a space limit we can't really invite any friends, so we are also having a casual backyard celebration a few weeks after we get married.  I suggested just renting a small hall or something but she really wants it at her house so we are having two.
The only thing we have prepared so far are the invitations for both parties.  We don't have to do anything else for the party at his parents so that is nice.
What are you all doing?

No ATR reception here either.  We all live between 2 and 3 hours out so my family will be making the drive to celebrate with us.

We didn't have one either.   We invited everyone who we wanted to invite to the OBX.  One reception was enough for us.

We are having one about a month after the wedding at a local church hall ( my FI's parents work there so its free). I am planning on incorporating some of the same decorations to save money. We are also planning to put out photos and photobooks for the guests to see. As far as food, were just doing casual lunch/BBQ stuff because we are doing it early afternon ish.

ldybug-- did you send out the AHR invites with your regular invites for the wedding? or separate? I want people to feel like I thought of them and send them a full invite, but I know they won't be traveling to obx with us....so I'm not sure how to handle the AHR invite situation??

I haven't decided on the AHR yet. I would love to do one for the family friends at home that can't make it to the OBX. But if I have one I think I have to have two because he is from illinois and I am from MA. I just dont know if i can afford to have three receptions! I guess i will have to wait and see what i have left in my budget..

We're doing an AHR 1 week after the wedding (in hind sight, I kind of wish we had a little more time in betwen!)  This made my invites a bit complicated since some people were only invited to one of the other (we're not as close with my dad's family, and they're local anyway, so they're coming to the AHR, my mom's is going to OBX) but I separated everything out, and those that were invited to both received both at the same time.
We're having a DJ, but simple catered food as well, and our neighbors own a golf course and are letting us use it for dirt cheap.  A friend works for a beer company so she's bringing most of the beer, and we'll just have wine included, then cash bar since the golf course obviously has a full one.  I'm also thinking about using the same decorations, and will definitely encorporate the beach theme, even though it will be Oct 1st and the leaves might be changing!  Since I love my dress so much, I'm also waering it there.  We're going to have my sister pull together a slide show of pictures from our cameras from the wedding to display as well.

I don't know about you but I'm SO excited that we decided to do this.  it helped keep our #s down in OBX and make it more intimate, and then when I'm sad it's all over, I have another very low-key/ low-maintenance PARTY to look forward to with all of our friends 1 week later.  Cool

We only invited our immediate families to the wedding who all live in Ohio so we sent wedding invites a long time ago.  Our AHR is Sept 17th and we are just sending those out starting today.  By now everyone knows how we are doing it.

In your situation. I think if they are invited to the wedding in OBX but you know they aren't coming,  I would send an invite anyway.  Don't send an invite if you don't really want them at OBX, they may actually come.

oh of course not- sorry, by "complicated" I just meant it took more effort to sort things out and make sure everyone got the right invites!  Because I figured people would come wether I wanted/expected them to or not, we just cut the invite list to bare minimum for OBX.  This also allowed us to have it at an event home instead of venue (100 person max at most).   It was such a weight off my shoulders as soon as we decided to do an AHR when it came to invites and worrying about certain family members and everything.

We are doing it slightly differently... Because of the extensively large families we come from, we are having an at home Ceremony with everyone. My family owns a christmas tree farm so we are getting married in the back yard with a huge tent and having a cocktails/appetizers/desert gathering after the actual ceremony. Simple, and long enough that everyone can be there to see us get married. In OBX, we are renting two houses and having a reception down there! We are planning to get married right before leaving for OBX, a day or two so we can head right there to celebrate! Not everyone can afford/take the vacation time/is healthy enough to travel that far and we want to be able to enjoy it with those we love.
