Having a Hard Day: NWR

So I work for my county's department of education. I'm going into my second year working with them. I currently work as an educational assistant in a special education classroom. I love my kids and special ed coworkers, don't get me wrong, but I went to college and got my degree in early childhood education and I am a certified teacher, so I want my own classroom. Over the past two years, I have applied for over 300 jobs. I made a 4.0 in all of my education classes, graduated cum laude, have good references, so I don't understand why I haven't been able to get an interview even.

This is all coming out now because we started our inservice today. We have a new principal and she brought on 19 new teachers (a lot of them came with her from her old school) but at least 4 of them are teaching for the first time this year. So that really was bothering me, but then we were in groups and I was talking to one of the brand new first-year teachers, and I told her I was an assistant, etc. Her response? "Have you thought about getting your teaching degree?" Nail in the coffin for me. I just don't know what to do at this point. Obviously having worked in the system last year didn't help me at all with getting a job, I barely get paid anything so I struggle big time to make ends meet, and I would make at least twice what I do now if I were to quit my job and get a serving position.

Sorry guys, just frustrated. Thanks for letting me vent.

I completely understand what you are going through.  I have my teaching degree in early childhood education and my master degree in which i also got a 4.0.  I have had to get an extension on my teaching certificate because it was going to lapse.  Right now I teach for head start which is about half of what a school teacher would make and there are so many regulations and paper work/filing that it makes it hard to get creative.
Sometimes it is just luck that gets you a teaching job.  Since your degree is early childhood, would you be interested in teaching in a private preschool to get your own classroom?

  • Good luck to you both is all I can think to say. Getting a job in the teaching field seems overly difficult right now (like many other fields). But I'm sure you'll both get there!

  • Don't give up! I have no other advice, except just to hang in there and keep trying. I can imagine the disappointment, and it wouldn't be that way if it werent important enough to keep trying for

  • I know exactly what you are going through I graduated last year in the top of my class and a 4.0 GPA in my education classes. I couldn't even get an assistant teaching job this past school year, I had to substitute (so I get those comments all the time). I finally caught a break this year and I have a leave of absence position. Although it isn't permenant, at least it is a foot in the door. So unfortunately I completely understand what you are going through.
