  From a person that has been in a few weddings...I absolutely attest the traditional bridal party gifts.  To me, it shows that the bride gave absolutely no thought into what each girl who is supposed to be a close friend or family member might like.
  
  Also, if you include anything within the gift that is supposed to be used at your wedding (such as jewelry, bridesmaid tee, etc) then that is not considered a gift.  A gift is something that they can use on their own time and in their own way.
  
  If you shop for each girl like it is their birthday and give yourself a budget (like $50 for each girl) then that gift will be meaningful to that person and since each person likes different things they will not fee less important if you got them something different.
  
  Here is an example of what my sister did...
  BM #1 - set of nice wine glasses
  BM #2 - porcelin vase
  BM #3 - gift card for a massage and mani/pedi
  MOH (me) - pearl necklace
  
  She took each persons likes into account and bought them something that they would actually use and enjoy.

  Doing the same gift for everyone is the antiquated tradition.  It's easier, but a lot less personal and meaningful.  Putting thought into individual gifts shows that you care about each person as an individual, whereas identical gifts shows that you care about them, but just as it relates to your wedding and that they are all the same and interchangable to you.

  You *can* do the same gift for all of them, but you do not *have* to. If you think that all of your BMs would like the bag and robe, then go fort it, but if they would be less than pleased, find them each something unique. I'd say to nix the jewelry-- that is usually a wedding prop, not a gift. I ended up buying pretty much the same thing for each girl and while they liked the presents, I now regret that I didn't take more time to honor our friendship and their unique personalities in the gifts.

  I'm doing a variation of both.  I have purchased all of the same things for my BMs: a tote bag, a copy of the movie bridesmaids, a small angel figurine, a shawl, and a pendant necklace.  The pendant necklace is individual to each girl and is not for the wedding - I picked something they would wear in their everyday life. 
  
  Just do what you are comfortable doing.  Don't stress over it!

  I also did a variation on the all the same/everyone something different gift.  It worked for me because my friends/sisters shared some similar likes.  Each lady got a purse/bag suited to their individual style and some sort of accessory (hair pins, scarf, earrings, etc.) depending on her tastes.  I did also get them each a necklace to wear day-of, but that was not included in their gift since that was part of their wedding day look.

  I was thinking of getting each BM a different gift, but then I had a hard time thinking of what to get them. I decided to give them each the same thing but get it embroidered with their names or initials (havent decided yet) so it has that personalization touch. Thirty-One has really cute stuff if you know anyone who sells it, cute beach bags and jewelery rolls and things like taht you can get personalized.
