Fingernail almost completely off :(

So yesterday I had terrible cramps. Tried a heating pad, but decided a nice hot bath would be better. Then my bath got too hot, so I tried to open a window for some fresh air. In our bathroom we have two windows..one I know is bad because it sliced Fi's fingers the day we moved in, and a good one.

I tried to open the good one but it was frozen. I thought the issue with the bad one was that the bottom window would not stay up. I unlocked it and immediately the top part came down on my fingers that were at the lock. My middle fingernail on my right hand was almost completely severed in half. It's hanging on, but just barely...the whole bottom part popped out.

So I have two real reasons for telling you this.

1) My typing really stinks now, so if I have spelling/punctuation/capitalization errors I'm sorry.

2) How long does it take a nail to grow back? I have been taking the biotin supplements now for a few months. Any thoughts?!

Oh man I'm sorry! A similar situation happened to my brother. He works at the restaurant our reception is at and he was carrying a heavy tray of prime rib I believe and his nail got smashed and it's still growing back

I'm so sorry- but the good news is it should grow back pretty fast. I would think in a few months.

Ouch - so sorry! I hate when my fingernail gets caught on something, it stings for good hour or so. But I agree with Chelsea, it should be back within the next few months. Make sure you keep it clean so it doesn't get infected

Fingernails generally grow pretty quickly, but it's very much individual, so really you're the only person who can tell. You should be back to "normal" in a couple of months at the latest, provided there's not a lot of damage to your fingertip/nail bed aside from the nail coming off. If it bruises a ton, your finger might just decide to scrap what you have left of the nail completely and start over. If you think there might be a big problem, I'd recommend having a doctor look at it!

I think it really depends...I've only had a nail pop off once before.

A bench fell on my big toe when I was younger and the old nail didn't pop off until the new one had grown in halfway (sorry if this is TMI), but I think it was 3 or 4 months until it looked normal again, but it's definitely thicker than my other nails.

If you want, you can get them to put a fake nail on that finger while it grows back.

ETA: If you still have half the nail, I say 2 months tops.

Abbe, this fingernail definitely will not last. It is only hanging on by a small corner piece at the top. The rest of it is completely off so I will definitely need to regrow a new nail.

Kelsey, I'm afraid of it growing back and looking different from all of the others. Also, I considered a fake nail, but I am too afraid that it might lead to infection.

As long as I have some type of nail for the wedding, I will be okay. I was planning on getting fake nails anyway, so as long as they have something to work with it will be fine. It's sad because the first thing I thought of after the pain had subsided was that I would have a mutant finger for the wedding. Happy to see you ladies think it won't take too long to grow back!

With roughly 5 months left to go for all of us here, I think that's a normal reaction....:)

I'm glad the pain has mostly subsided though. You'll definitely want to wear a bandaid for protection though, to risk injuring the nail bed further. And if you see any really awful bruising or cuts, definitely go see a doctor...an infection or other bad tissue damage is definitely not what you want at this point!

Oh Shan I'm so sorry, that's such a painful thing to happen.

I'm thinking a few months but I wouldn't put an acrylic or anything on it and just pay attention to keeping it clean because it's such fresh and raw skin that it's prone to infection I think.

I had one fall off in August., I smashed it in a conference room door at work back in June, it took 2 months to fall off. Once it came off, it grew back in less than 2 months. Now I'm paranoid I'm going to do something stupid again before the wedding.
