Really, they're just for decoration.  I don't find them necessary.

LOL...quemiras, for awhile I was like you. I had NO idea what chargers were. I kept reading about Knotties buying silver/gold chargers and wondered what they were. It got to the point were I called my cousin and asked her, haha.
Chargers are mean't to be for decoration. You place the dinner plate on top. It really serves no purpose, just to make the table look pretty.

What color where you thinking? Hypothetically if you were to go for them? While, yes, they are fluff if there is a decor item you are looking for you can get lucky by looking at the weddingbee.com classifieds.  That's where I got mine from a bride anxious to get rid of them. Doing research ahead of time definitely pays--while it is definately fluff when figuring out your budget.

Chargers are not necessary.  They add a layer of color when you are planning your tablescape decor.  They also add a layer of detail that your coordinator has to worry about.  It sounds simple: here's a plate; put it under the real eating plate--it takes like 2 seconds in my valley girl speak.  But when you have to do it 100 times or more, the timing adds up and you got to think of it as something else your coordinator as to take care of during set up even if you have the money to throw around for your chargers.

That's what I am going through right now.  What I am planning to do is actually obtaining the napkins from our venue 2 nights before and folding them myself, putting them on the chargers, and then all the staff has to do is place them. Tina had to hire an extra assistant for my wedding to deal with all the little details I incorporated into the decor.

As a bride you need to think both in terms of money and time for the people you hire.  Sometimes time can make up for money; sometimes money can make up for time.  You need to figure out what middle ground works for you and what you are willing to do to reconcile the descrepencies.  Nothing is perfect.

I bought beaded chargers in deep plum that laid flat.... they look really great!!!  I would only get them if they really accentuated your theme, etc.
