Dentist Dread

Hi ladies.  I hope everyone is having a good Tuesday!

So, I have a dentist appointment this afternoon, because I want to get my teeth cleaned and rebonded before the wedding.  I have never had a problem with the dentist, going to the dentist, needles, novicaine, etc.

However, I woke up this morning completely freaked out about having to go. I'm convinced they're going to yell at me for not flossing enough, or that they'll find something wrong that will cost an obscene amount of money to fix.

This is totally irrational and yet, I've almost picked up the phone to cancel the appointment twice in the past half-hour.

Is anyone else's wedding stress coming out in weird ways?

I just want to cry. Mostly because of the dentist, but also because it is raining.

Re: Dentist Dread

  • I just have a general fear of the dentist.  I have jaw recenstruction surgery 11 years ago and have dreaded going ever since.  I went a few weeks ago for a cleaning and had 3 cavities.  When I went back to get them filled, I had to convince myself that I was not having an allergic reaction to the novicaine since I started weezing at the though of the drill.  FI usually goes with me for everything but the nurse said he couldn't come in.  When I went to get the other ones done, he was with me the whole time.

  • I hate the dentist for no explainable reason!  i never go becuase they always give me bad news, but my fiance says if i went more i would get good news. pft!
even if they find cavities or whatever they cant force you to have them fixed  right there and then.

That is an excellent point!  I really just want my teeth cleaned and bonded (front two teeth). I suppose I can go back for the fillings etc. post wedding, right?  Another month isn't going to kill me, right?

    Ugh, SHUT UP ANXIOUS BRAIN!

  • I never used to hate the dentist and even as a kid I never really minded having to go to the dentist.  I had braces for 2+ years, so I guess going to the dentist just seemed routine. However, now I HATE going to the dentist because I don't have dental insurance.  Because of the no insurance thing, I didn't go to the dentist for a few years, and that's when I got my very first cavity (made it 26 years without one!).  Now I make sure that I go every 6 months, but I'm terrified that they'll find a problem and that it'll be $$$ to fix without insurance.

  • I had the same fear last week when I went.   I even had a tooth that was a little achy and  I was positive they were going to tell me that I needed an (expensive) root canal.  But I came out with a clean bill of health!!! I hope that you walk away alright as well.  I did get a little slap on the wrist for not flossing as much as I should.  Oh well...

  • Oh Jenna that's awful! The boys and I go every six months, it isn't too bothersome. I bet you are right about the wedding emtions overwhelming everything else. Take a deep breath, go this afternoon - and tomorrow morning, it will be behind you!

  • Reading the title of this thread gave me anxiety. I am terrified of the dentist and I have a reason.

Warning- JennaBird do not read until you are back from the dentist, I don't want to scare you.

When I was 7 years old I was at a regular checkup. They were using the hook instrument on my teeth to check for cavities and the tip broke off of the instrument, slid down my throat and I had to take the ambulance to the emergency room to have x rays. I was very lucky that the hook didn't puncture anything and I didn't have to have surgery. Almost 20 years later I am still scared shitless to go to the dentist, I may have to have my wisdom teeth taken out, but I will wait on that one.

  • Update!  So, I lived through the dentist. Everyone in the office was wonderful, my teeth are, for the most part, in great shape and they were able to buff away some of the stains I had been worrying about for wedding day (darn you, coffee and red wine)!

Not so good news: my front left tooth, on which I had a root canal done ten years ago, is about the break. Like, the whole dang tooth.  This leaves me more than a little uneasy.  The dentist was great and scheduled me next week to seal and bond it and took impressions for the "worst case scenario", which would be missing a front tooth on wedding day.

Overall, it wasn't the greatest news, but I'm glad that everyone at the office was so nice and helpful.

I would have been an even bigger ball of nerves without the support -- thanks ladies!!
