any advice is perfect!!!

this is a little off topic but not really. im trying to decide what to go to school for. ive always loves weddings since i was a kid (what little girl hasnt ) i am really considering owning my own wedding venu. buying out a big empy building and turning it into the ultimate wedding venue with multiple venues in the building its self. i know trying to find the perfect venue is hard. its either beautiful but too expensive or its just the right price but not exactly what you had in mind. im just trying to get an idea from brides or any one else in the wedding party of what they think. how big are wedding venues still or are people just trying to do their own thing? any input would be very appreciated. thank you!

  • If you want to own your own company (of any kind) I would suggest majoring in business.

    Not to be rude but...
If you are getting in the wedding business do not assume, as your post does, that every little has dreamed about her wedding since forever.  That's not the case, and for those brides who haven't, and aren't really into the whole wedding stuff, find it annoying when vendors gush and go over the top.  Learn to read your clients before you make assumptions, or better yet, ask.

  • For school, some type of business degree would be best.  You can major in Business and get a four year degree but there are also certificate programs in Business at most community colleges which only take a year or two or three to complete (depending on how fast you do it and what kind of program it is).

This sounds like a good business idea.  However, I tink it will only work if you live in a fairly major city which I don't know if you do or not.

I don't know how big wedding venues are.  My FI and I are getting married in the church my parents got married in.  All my close friends who have gotten married have had outdoor summer weddings in a friend's backyard, out in a wilderness area off a dirt road, etc. so there was no real "venue".  So, I guess that means from my experience, no, venues are not big at all.

And I ditto the PP who said not every little girl dreams of her wedding day.  There are many girls who haven't and who don't have that "fairytale wedding" in their minds.  I am one of them.

    Hope that helps!
  • Ditto Retread.  Hospitality and Management, Entrepreneurship and Management...different schools will have different titles for this major, but if you can focus on hospitality and maybe take courses in small business management, accounting, and marketing, you will have a more holistic understanding of what it takes to run a business and how to properly maintain the books.
