Photographer ~ Brant Hemingway ~ Anyone use him?

Hi!

I have a meeting with Brant on Monday (he's in Ellendale). Says he's been doing wedding photography for more than 18 years. He's cutting me a pretty a good deal, I think. He's giving me 200 4x6s, Disc with all the pictures (1000+), 8 hours, one photographer, my own copyright, viewable online, free engagement session, and will deduct $50 for every hour I don't want.

His normal price is $1990, but he's having a sale through to the end of the year to make the package $995. Since I'm having a Monday wedding, he's taking off an additional $100. So it would be $895 minus $250 since we only need him about 3 hours, which makes the total approximately $645, plus tip. I think this is a really good deal considering a good chunk of my budget is for photography (we're trying to do about $2000, not including dress). What do you think (about the photography, not budget Tongue out)?

My sister is a wedding photographer, too, but I want as many pictures as possible. She said that his photos seem pretty traditional and straight-forward. My sister takes more modern and angled pictures. I plan to ask him if he can do angle shots and shots that are out-of-norm. Has anyone else used him or know anyone who has? I found him through Go2Wed.com.

Honestly I would recommend continuing your search.  This photog's style is definitely traditional and given that you are looking for a more editoral approach I would go with someone else.  There are lots of reasonably priced photogs that many have used on this board (I'll try to find a link to a previous thread and post that as well).

I would recommend contacting a few that match the style you're looking for and seeing what they can offer as far as price. I think you've got some definite room for negotiation, especially given that your wedding is on a Monday and you need so few hours.  Good luck!

If you only need 3 hours of photography you should look into Elisabeth Ann Photography www.ElisabethAnnPhotography.com.

My friend just used her for her Friday evening wedding and it was something like $600. She has the style you are looking for. Hope that helps.

After quincygirl's request, I went through all 11 of my photography options and sent every single one of them an email with questions. Hopefully I'll receive some responses over the next few days. ElisabethAnnPhotography is one of those on my list.

I also sent an email to the head of the photography club at MSUMankato and he responded letting me know they will announce it to the class to see if any students want to build their portfolio. I'll definitely let you all know how THAT turns out; I'm super nervous about hiring a student over a professional, but I definitely want to consider the option.

My dad wanted to ask our church photographer if he'd be interested in photographing the ceremony, and my sister (who is a prof.wedding photog.) could do the rest, but my FI instantly said no to that. We'll ask anyway, get a portofolio from him if he says yes, and present that to my FI to see if maybe he'd change his mind.

I wouldn't impose the photography onto your sister- unless you truly are a fan of her work :-)

Since you only want 3 hours of coverage (I'm assuming you only REALLY want ceremony, formals & reception pics), you could go with Brant- but if you're dead set on wanting the editorial style- I'd keep looking.
