Freelance hair and make-up

Based on reading the boards, alot of people are using S&C. I am looking for someone who has hair/makeup training that is willing to come to you kind of on the side I suppose. I can't bear the thought of spending hundreds of dollars on this and there's got to be people out there that can do a nice job for way cheaper. Our wedding is in the NW metro if that helps...thanks ladies! :)

  • I asked this same question a couple weeks ago and didn't get much response except for S & C.  I went on to their site & signed up to receive a quote and when I received it they wanted to charge me the same amount for my trial as application & hair on my wedding day!  I personally think that's ridiculous!  I'm currently waiting to hear back from Lisa Reinhardt, who's a little more reasonable but still pricey.

Hope to find another option too!

I'm an ex-knottie who's been lurking again since I'm now a MOH for my sister's upcoming wedding.
I wanted to say that I used S & C for my wedding and thought they were very reasonably priced.  They did an AMAZING job on me and my girls.

I didn't even bat an eye that they charged the same amount for a trial.  Think of it this way...If they are TRULY trialing for your wedding day.  They are using the same products, doing the same exact amount of work...maybe more if the first look you do, you don't like then they have to do it again differently.  If they are doing the same work, and using the same products, why would they charge you differently just because it's a different day?

Just saying.  Not trying to start any drama, I just feel that S & C is a great company and I feel the need to defend them, that's all.

I completely agree. I had my hair and makeup trial with Kelly from S&C this past weekend and she played around with three different hairstyles and two different makeup looks so I could choose the ones I loved best. If anything, she probably invested MORE time, work and product on the trial than she will on my actual wedding day.

While I understand that not everyone is willing to splurge on professional hair and makeup that isn't exactly cheap, it's important to understand the cost behind the service. I can't imagine not having a trial run before my wedding day so to me, it was money well spent.

  • Would you trust a close friend/family member to do your makeup?  I am planning on asking my sister and SIL to work together to do my makeup, rather than having a salon do it!  Also, if you trust them, cosmetology schools generally are cheaper than salons and do a pretty good job with updos!! At least, they do in rural MN (I am in midwestern MN, my town is pretty small)!!

  • I am using Emily J Makeup.   She is also kind of pricy (most for the bride), but this is one area I am splurging on because of my little insecurities and just wanting to feel 'perfect' on the day.  My bridal party is not required to use her - but most of them have signed up.

  • I used Justine Hornick for hair http://www.justinehornick.com And Jody Olson for make-up http://makeupsavvyonline.com/ They came to me, I don't remember the prices I paid but it wasn't outlandish. nice people and did a great job.

I agree with you but here is the interesting part - while doing research I've come across a few different companies that are just as highly reviewed and rated but  are not only less expensive but INCLUDE the trial as part of the package price.  $500 is just too rich for my blood for one person's hair and makeup done twice.  $250 a pop for no more than 2 hours' time - not for me.

I used MN Bridal Makeup Artistry for my E pics and the work they did was amazing and cheaper than S & C...I'd use them again but they require at least 4 people get their services during the busy wedding season and it's only my MOH and me getting hair & makeup because we don't have a wedding party.

I'm seeing if my FI's aunt, who is a stylist, knows of any good recs.

  • I don't really think a hair/makeup trial is that necessary, but that is just me. I used S&C and sent my artist ideas for makeup& hair via email and it turned out perfectly. She also allotted plenty of time for changes if I wanted them when she finished, which I didn't want because I was so pleased.

  • I didn't do a trial either. I knew what might look good for me and sent a few ideas. I let the artist take it from there and it wasn't that hard to make a tweak or two. All turned out great and I liked saving the money.
  • Dawn L Frederickson Hairstyling And Make Up Artistry was very reasonable when I last requested a price quote from her... less than $200 for everything for the bride, including trial.  Bridesmaid updos were $70, though... I don't think she has a website, but she does have a facebook page and a linkedin profile.

I ended up using Smart and Chic since their bridesmaid updos were more reasonably priced than most on-site artists that I found.  We also had a friend's sister (recently licensed cosmetologist) come onsite for two of the bridesmaids because she only charged $40 per updo.  I did opt for a trial for my hair because it is super thin and frizzy and wanted to make sure that my inspiration hairstyles were actually feasible... Amber B with S+C worked some serious miracles with my hair!  For me, the trial was worth it, but definitely not necessary for all.
  • Thanks for all your input! I have no doubt S&C does good work based on what I read on other posts here, I was just seeing if there was anything else out there to give myself options. I'm just getting stressed since my wedding is in the middle of prom season and I have nothing booked yet, but S&C looks like it will be a good option for me too :)
