Tore my ACL/MCLs

I am sad. I was doing awesome with insanity. And now I dont know what i am going to do now. :( I fell down my concrete steps outside. Granted I was lucky, but I am really depressed about it. My ACL was already ripped some so it prevented me from working out like I used to, and I believe contributed immensely to my weight gain. I now have to get surgery because I cant walk without it so perhaps its for the best. Just totally bummed, but know that it will be better in the long run.

    Oh no daffy!  Feel better!!!

Good luck on the surgery and keep us posted.  Maybe you could have some fun spending your gym time as kitchen time (given so much of weight loss is about food.)  Try cooking up some new healthy and creative meals with your extra recovery time to keep yourself going and goals on track.

  • Daffy that sucks!!

A co-worker of mine was in a similar situation with torn MCL. ACL and damaged meniscus also from a fall down stairs....it took her a few weeks but she did keep going with P90.She just modified it and concentrated on her upper body and stuck with what she was able to do.

Judging by what my co-worker went through its a brutally painful experience so I hope you are ok and not suffering too much pain :(

  • Oh no, that's terrible. I'm so sorry. Do you know what the down time will be after the surgery?

  • They are saying 4-6 weeks of non weight on my left leg. I start back to school the end of August too so I will be put a few weeks behind in clinical too. I still cant believe it.

And I will admit, when I had a tear in it before it was pretty painful. I injured it first playing hockey. I have played a lot of very physical sports in my day and tearing the ligaments in my knee have been the most painful injury. After I fell down the stairs I laid in the street for a good 45 minutes because the pain knocked the wind out of me and I could not catch my breath. I felt bad for FI, he was the one who rescued me from the street after my neighbor walked right past me and didnt even ask if I was ok.

I am going to work on my diet after today. Today FI wants to go to iHop and he wont take no for an answer. He said I can take a break from my diet for one day after the last few days Ive had. I am also going to talk to the doctor about what I can do. I am sure I can modify P90x and get in the pool. I did a lot of water therapy the first time it happened and i think that was how I was able to escape surgery for several years.

  • So sorry to hear that. I tore my ACL playing volleyball (12 years ago now), and had surgery, and it was so hard to not be able to play my sports and exercise, let alone do tasks of daily life like walking the dog for four weeks! And I was utterly single at the time. Blech. It totally sucked. I consoled myself with Oreo cookies, but since I ate them instead of dinner, I didn't actually gain weight. : )

I don't know what your situation is, but I know riding the stationary bike was part of my "pre-hab" to get the leg as strong as possible before surgery. So if you have access to one of those, perhaps that can be your new go-to exercise. I used to only ever do it for 20 minutes, but when it became the only thing I could do, I'd stay on for 40.

Best of luck to you, and know that you will be back. You may ant to search online for "Bob's knee board" -- I can't imagine it wouldn't still be out there somewhere, and it was a fantastic online support community pre and post surgery. After rehabbing, I played volleyball again at the same level as when I'd gotten hurt. And while I've now given up volleyball becuase it hurts too many places in bad ways, I've taken up long distance running using the Galloway method, and so far so good. Best wishes to you!
  • I tore my ACL and MCl.  I had surgery and my doctor told me to start range of motion exercises immediately.  I was able to weight bear in one week and started physical therapy in 2 weeks.  Just make sure you follow the Dr.'s orders and be dillegent with your strengh training exercises.  Within 3 month, you should be able to use a stationary bike.  I started running again in 6 month.  I did work very hard on my recovery.  As long as you eat well during the down months, you'll be ready for the wedding!
