C&P - actual custom design?

Hi ladies,

I've heard great things about Cards & Pockets, so we're thinking about ordering invites from there soon. I'm a graphic designer, but on a budget--so I can design whatever I want, but would like to keep things somewhat simple (C&P can print/cut everything for you). I definitely don't want to go the route of printing them myself; looking for really good quality :)

I'm just a little confused about how they work. How much do they let you customize? Not just colors and fonts; but would they send me a template or something that I could design completely myself, and send back to them to print? Anyone have experience with this?

If not, anyone know of any other affordable sites that can work with you like this? TIA!

  • I've heard of people using Vista Print for this, but I've also heard that VP has pretty low quality paper.

I must say though, there's probably not going to be that much difference between what a company like that prints and what you can print in your home printer. You can order cut pieces and then print and assemble yourself. As long as you have a top loading printer, and don't mind patiently feeding a few sheets at a time into the printer, cardstock will go through fine. Letting metallic paper dry without stacking is a must, if you use that type of paper.

CP has as whole print shop.  They don't have designers, but if you make something that you want pre cut and printed you send a jpeg of whatever to their print shop and they'll give you a quote.  They're really awesome about getting abck to you quickly.

I think they do have a microsoft template or something somewhere on their website.  I'll poke around and look for the link for you.

    Edit:
http://www.cardsandpockets.com/print_shop.aspx is the direct link to the print shop. there's a great faq page.

  • My FI designed our invitations and we are printing them using Cards & Pockets. You just have to email the PDFs of your designs (FI designed them in Illustrator and converted them to PDFs). They send you a quote (which is super reasonable) and then it takes less than a week to get a sample-they charged us $5 for the sample printing. For me it's worth it to have someone else print and cut them.

They do have a template but I would just use their guidelines and do it in illustrator, honestly. The results are so much better than Word. Also I recmmend using a matte paper, I just don't like the way printing looks on metallics.

I'm pretty sure it's Word, but they have the guidelines for any program you use. We just stuck to standard 5x7 and 4x6 card sizes and added the margins for full bleed.

  • I just sent my PDF to cards and pockets for an estimate. I used Photoshop and did a total custom design. I am hoping I'll get a good price and get my sample as well since that is huge to actually see it printed before you commit.

Also, I have emailed cards and pockets questions in the past and they are very helpful and responsive so if you have any questions I suggest you email them and they should get back to you with helpful advice and good customer service.

Also, I was so happy to be able to order 1 sample of all the various pieces of m yinvitation, the mat, the envelope the pocket etc so I could see exactly what it would look like in one sample full package! and great pricing!
