healthy vs junk: calories

I'm starting back up on My Fitness Pal (yey!) and I have a girlfriend doing it with me this time, so hopefully that makes me more accountable to sticking with it.

I think I know the answer to this, basic math, 1 calorie=1 calorie.  But I get frustrated with things like my snack today- 1 low fat string cheese and a handful of blueberries and raw walnuts is 300 calories.  4 cookies is also 300 calories.  And yet I know that my cheese, nuts, and berries was probably the better option, even though they're the same on MFP.

Someone help me justify my healthy-but-caloric snacking.

How about you have one cookie, blueberries, and some walnuts?

Seeing as your just starting back up, it is quite important to stick to what you want to do.  But don't forget that a single cookie here and there is not going to completely derail you.  i find that people who have an "absolute don't eat this" list, tend to eventually cave and binge.  i've done it.  Forbidden fruit always tastes the best doesn't it?  :) That'll screw your healthy eating diet.

If you truly want a cookie, have one.  Food is meant to be enjoyed and not just to be nourishing.  Make sure you work some of your favorite foods into your diet.  Example: I love cake.  So I purposely budget my calories sometimes so I can have some.  Heck, Girl Scout cookies are being delivered tonight.  I've been extra vigilant about my calories to guarantee that I'll have enough left over to have 2 or 3 of those lemon ones.

Of course, the healthy food is better for your body.  Of course.  But an occasional treat isn't "bad" for you and frankly, i think it's good for overall well-being.

Congrats on getting back on the wagon.  Good Luck!
  • While it is true that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie, it's still important to remember why everyone wants to shove "healthy" food down your throat (lol pun.).

Foods that are easier for your body to digest (such as simple sugars... table sugar, for example.) are digested quickly. This tends to make you feel more hungry more frequently throughout the day AND with the excess sugar (blood sugar levels) your body goes into a mode where it stores the excess into FAT.
If you eat "healthier" food, like blueberries and whole wheats, it takes much longer for you to digest them. This keeps you full for longer and it prevents unneccesary storage of fats!

But, like PP said, if you want a cookie -- eat a cookie. Just make sure you do so in moderation!
