Escort Card Help

We're doing Escort Cards (I guess that's what they're called since they're not assigning seats at a table like place cards technically do) but I'm confused about something.  Each person is getting their own since their entree has to be indicated on the back.  My mom wants Mr. John Doe to have one and Mrs. John Doe to have one written just like that.  I think it should be John Doe on one and Jane Doe on another.  We are having a formal wedding but I just don't like the way Mrs. John Doe makes me feel.  Like the wives are the property of the husband.  Is there a "proper" way to do this and does using first names make it too informal?  Personally, I feel first names make it more personal.

Re: Escort Card Help

  • I haven't even thought about this yet but I suppose the proper and formal way to address it would be Mrs.John Doe, but since they are on seperate cards I don't see the problem with doing the ladies first names.

Either way I wouldn't stress about it I am sure the woman are used to either way as they are married.

  • I am also doing escort cards. However, you could do the couple on one card and show there dinner selections using stickers or something else on the card. That's what I am doing and my venue suggested it. Just a thought.

  • I'm doing separate cards for everyone, with each person's first and last name. Over my dead body would I call any woman "Mrs. John Doe." Even by standards of tradition that is an ancient form of address.

Unless you are having the most traditional, old fashioned wedding I would do Mrs. Jane Doe, espcially since that is what you feel comfortable with.

  • I'm using the woman's first name. The other way seems stuffy and antiquated.
  • I will be using Joseph Smith and Jessica Smith. If you are doing Black Tie then I think you would be fine using Mrs. Jessica Smith but otherwise it is not needed.
  • Thanks ladies!  I just talked to my mom and she basically sees my point and it was really only the like 6 old ladies (grandmothers, aunts, etc) who care about everything being so formal that would even notice.  It's my wedding, not a wedding for the opinionated few and it's definitely formal but not black tie.  I think we'll just go with first and last names.

  • We're also having a formal wedding and we're writing the woman's name on her escort card (and leaving out the Mr., Mrs., Ms. altogether). I think you're completely okay doing the same thing.
  • We're also just doing first and last names.

Completely agree. They won't be looking for an escort card with their husbands name, but their own.
