Affordable Wedding Dress Shop

I live just north of Boston and the top of my wedding dress budget is $800. Does anyone have any suggestions of wedding dress shops in my area where you think I will be able to find some options and also have a good experience?

I know some people frown on David's Bridal but I got my dress there and had a great experience.  I am not getting my alterations there b/c of the negative I heard.

Definitely check out Vows in Watertown. They have samples and you can get great deals.

Totally agree with what softballumpire just said. I got my dress from David's Bridal. The associate I worked with was great. My dress only cost $400!! And, it took only 2 weeks for it to come in.

$800 is a very reasonable budget (and my limit too!).  DB is a good place to start, but there are some designers that have dresses under $1000 as well.  For instance, Maggie Sottero (my was from them) and Alfred Angelo definitely make stuff in that price range.  I wish they told you the rpices on the website!

Here are a few stores I looked at:

Camilla's in Arlington:  I bought my dress here and loved it!  They have a pretty small selection, especially under $1000, but since I found mine here I have to recommend them.  :)

Precious Memories, Malden, MA:  Great store, good selection.  This is a great place to start.

Marry & Tux, Nashua NH:  Another great store, large selection, worth the drive.

Manhattan Bridals, Dedham (I think):  a little far and gets mixed reviews, but I went here twice and they were very nice to me.  They have a *huge* selection of BMs dresses (that was our second trip).

Note that alterations at any bridal salon will be more expensive than an independent seamstress.  I was *shocked* at the price Camilla's quoted me, $400 for alterations.  I got them done (+ more actually) for $200 with Fay in Billerica.

$800 was my budget as well and I found a beautiful gown at Madeleine's Daughter in Portsmouth, NH.  They were having a huge sample sale and I got my dress for $735 (over 50% off).

Quite a few salons sell sample dresses, which are heavily discounted.  I love my dress and am glad I was able to save $

I'm going to Second Alfred Angelo...they have a store in Danver's, Ma (I went to the one in N. Attleboro, on the south shore) and I had an incredible experience. Loved the people there, tons of dresses to try on, great quality, and the prices are right in your range. My dress was around $700, plus because I got my dress there, anyone in the wedding party, or parents, or FG, would get a 20% discount. Just to give you an idea I bought Style 1963, which was in that price range.  -

I second Camilla's in Arlington. That was my budget for my dress, and they came in at $800.  The saleswoman is amazing, I wouldn't hesitate at all recommending it.

I would call Bella Sera Bridal and see what they have in stock. They are in Danvers and were really great at keeping me within budget. Good Luck!

I'm a little late to the party but in case you are still checking this thread - I would strongly recommend Bride's Choice in Waltham.  I went to 3 other places and they had the most selection.  The dress I picked was around 800, but I tried on a bunch and there were plenty of gorgeous ones for under that.

Also, depending on the type of wedding you're having/your style, look online at some of the dept stores - designers like Nicole Miller are designing lots of reasonably priced wedding dresses.  Good luck!

In regards to Alfred Angelo's pricing - if you click on the tumbnail of a dress it will take you to a full page.  To the right of the pic of the dress you'll see "price" with bells next to it.  Click on the bells, and you'll get a legend of the price ranges.

Also, after watching several episodes of "Say yes to the dress" - don't try on a dress you can't afford.

I don't know how people feel about buying pre-owned dresses, but if you find a dress you love and its out of budget somewhere, I would definitely at least check some of the big pre-owned gown websites to see if you can find it for less. preownedweddingdresses.com, oncewed.com, etc. Max they've only been worn once, and some of them are still brand new with tags bc the bride bought a second dress or whatever! Good luck!
