Registries!!!!

Are you registered?  If you are, where?

FI and I have registered for our honeymoon...thats it.  We have lived together for over four years and have three children 15, 13, and 9.  We have a house full of stuff already, but we have never had a vacation...so we decided to register for our honeymoon!!! My mother thinks its tacky, but its our wedding and our honeymoon, and we are paying for all of it ourselves...so this is the registry we have chosen Wink  what about all of you??????

I'm sorry but I have to agree with your mother, honeymoon registries ARE tacky. Especially since when you register with one of those companies they take a cut of everything you guests spend. So if Aunt Sally spends $100 on your registry, YOU may only get credit for $85 of it.

We've also lived together for awhile but we still registered for things we've always wanted but wouldn't necessarily buy ourselves as well as upgrades to our existing things like sheets and towels, pots and pans, dishes, etc at Bed Bath and Beyond as well as Home Outfitters.

  • We are just registered for things that would be upgrades or things we'd like to have, but we are also having a wishing well.  People know we live together & have lived together for awhile now.  We've had a lot of people flat out ask where we're registered or if we're going to have a wishing well that they can just give us money.  I personally don't know much about the honeymoon registeries so Idk what my opinion on that really would be.

  • They're not my cup of tea either, but I do certainly see them done enough (I polled the ladies not all that long ago about how to gift from one for a shower, for example) that I think they are becoming more and more "accepted", even if not by some individuals, if that makes sense?

  • Fi & I registered at BBB, Macy*s, and Williams-Sonoma. I tried to narrow it down to two, but couldn't. I have everything I *need* but upgrades are necessary from the cheaper stuff. Plus there is other stuff we wanted.

We didn't do a HM registry, but thought about it. When I found out they take a cut of the gift some if not all of the time, we changed our minds. I'm sure we'll get money anyways at the wedding.

  • I registered for upgrades and curtians!  We bought our house in November and haven't had curtains this whole time.  We have a blanket pinned up over the bedroom so we don't give our neighbors a free show.
I honestly don't think a honeymoon registry is all that different than registering for items at a store.  I mean you're still picking your presents.  It's the same concept in my mind.

  • I wouldn't do the HM registry either, but it is your wedding so it is up to you. We have lived together for 56 years now and we are registering for upgrades, like pots and pans and dishes my parents handed down to us, and wish list type things, such as the Margaritaville blender. Our registry is at BBB.

  • We've lived together for a bit, but we registered for upgrades (from our mismatched junky stuff from college) and things we wouldn't buy ourselves.  We're registered at BBB, Macys, and C&B.

I'm with your mom - honeymoon registries are tacky, even if they're becoming more common.  If you can't afford to take a nice vacation, don't ask your guests to pay for it.  People already know cash is an awesome gift and you'd get all of it, instead of only 90%. And then you could take that cash and use it for a honeymoon after the fact.
  • We registered at Bed Bath and Beyond.  We have lived together for 8 years now, but decided to upgrade some things that we wouldn't purchse ourselves.  To date, very few items have been purchased off of our registry, most people gave us cash for our shower.

  • I would love to have a honeymoon registry bc we aren't going on a honeymoon bc we are paying for everything ourselves. But we are just registered at BBB

  • Wow...I didn't expect such negativity...but thats fine...I was just curious what all of you were doing....the Honeymoon Registry does not take a cut...it is a service that the company we are using offers for free.  We wouldn't have done it otherwise....but it is nice to see everyones opinion....I'm wondering if there are any others out there doing a HM registry????  It is more accepted...or at least in the area in where I live....we are doing almost everything non-traditional......however, everything we are doing is right for us.....keep em coming...where are you registered!!!  I like seeing the diversity in what each couple had chosen to do...Laughing

  • You can count me among those who don't see anything wrong with an HM registry, so long as the registry service isn't getting a cut of people's gifts and so long as you're actually using the money for what the gift giver wants you to use it for. It would suck if someone gave you 100 bucks for, say, a spa visit at your resort, and you turned around and spent it on something else. I was thinking of doing an HM registry, but FI didn't want to, so we didn't. We're keeping it pretty simple; one fairly small registry at BBB that mainly consists of upgrades and wish list items...stuff we could make good use of but just haven't bothered to buy ourselves.

  • We registered at Dillards and Kohls. Then as an afterthought Walmart since both Kohls and Dillards are about an hour away and the stuff at Walmart is usually not AS high end and therefore not as expensive. Its the only store we have here in town. I wouldn't register for a honeymoon. We can't afford one so I'd love to get some cash to maybe put towards one though.

  • We are registered with Honeyfund.com for our honeymoon and that's it.  Yes, there are some companies out there that take a certain percentage per "gift" given, but honeyfund doesn't.  If the gift giver pays through paypal (which you can agree to using or not), then paypal takes their percentage, just like they do with any other transaction.

We have been to a couple of weddings where there couple had a honeymoon registry and we always bought off that.  I think it's a great idea and to help someone go on their dream vacation is awesome in my opinion.  Our guests have been giving us feedback, without us asking, and they all seem to agree with me.

I think it's a great option for couples like us that really, truely, do not want or need anything for their homes.  FI and I moved in together into our first home in October and we pretty much already had everything we needed.  If we needed to upgrade or get something new, we bought it back then.  I wasn't going to wait a year just so I could have items to register for.  I'm pretty traditional, but I really don't see the difference in asking for towels vs paying for part of your honeymoon.

  • I can understand people registering for them, I'm not sure I'd want to buy things off it (especially if the company gets a cut), I'd way rather take the money and just give it directly to the couple. We're registered at BBB and Kohl's, honestly not a fan of the Kohl's registry since alot of the stuff is online only, but we wanted somewhere besides BBB that was a little lower priced.  We're upgrading our sheets (since we got a King bed recently and only had 2 sets of sheets), upgrading towels and getting some small things that we think are cool, but haven't gotten around to purchasing. We've lived together now for 1.5yr and he's lived by himself for 10+ years so we have alot of things and can afford anything we'd need, so the registry has been a tough part because I hate the idea of people buying us things if we can do it ourselves >_<

  • We have lived together for 3 years too.  We are registered at Macy's, BBB, & Younkers (I had to pick a store in my hometown since my great-gma can't drive far).

We've seen HM registries done before, and I never side-eyed them, however once I found out that most companies take some of the money, I really didn't like it.  I know you say you are going to do it, but I think that since you already know that some in your circle/family don't approve, maybe you should just not register at all, and get the cash.   People will know if you don't have a store called out, then you just want money....which you can then put towards a vacation.  However, if you are having any showers, you do need to have some physical registry.  I digress though since you are adament about it.

Anyway, our registries.  I just started them!  We too weren't sure what to register for and figured we would just get some upgrades from our hodge podge dishes & towels.  I'm super excited for a new vacuum too, and a carpet cleaner to clean up after the dog!!  You would be surprised how much you can find to upgrade even after being established for a long time!

  • We are registered at BBB and Walmart.  We had thought about registering at Target but decided against it when we heard many people had trouble with it.

  • I actually like the honeymoon registries but I know that wouldn't be well accepted among my family.

we chose tor egister at home outfitters and sears because they have locations pretty much everywhere and we have family from out of town.  we don't live together but our mothers had been hoarding housewares for us both.  we had a lot of basics (towels, dishes, storage containers) so we registered for nice sheets, fancy dishes, specialty bakeware and linens.
we originally just had the HO registry but a lot of stuff on it is discontinued, probably becuase we registered last october!  we were having an engagement party last november and my fiance's family wanted to buy us gifts.

I think honeymoon registries are awesome! If it were up to me, I'd rather have gifts toward a great experience than material things that will need to be replaced in several years. I'm a scrapbooker and just love preserving memories

We didn't do one because we totally needed stuff for the house. We've lived in our house for 3 years and all we've had are stuff from college which are 5-10years old...our non-stick pans are no longer non-stick, our sheets and towels are thinning out, our toaster burns everything unless you stare at it, etc.

  • We're registered at Macy's and Sur La Table.

My feeling with honeymoon registries is that if people want to give cash, they can just give cash.  In my area it's typical to give a gift for the bridal shower but money for the wedding itself.
