Getting in Shape

Just had back surgery 2 months ago, any ideas for exercises?

I had back surgery 2 months ago and have recovered well. My doctor said that I can work out now that I have healed, but I'm not sure how to start. I want something that will help strengthen my core and my back muscles to start, but I don't want to over-do it and injure myself again. Anyone have any ideas on simple exercises that will get me started?

  • Since a greatest amnount of us are not doctors or physical therapists, I would most likely try asking your doctor what kind of exercises that you're allowed to start. Have him give you some ideas. Maybe try going to physical therapy.

    Or you could even get a personal trainer help you with finding exercises that would work best for you. But make sure you check their credentials because some PTs out there haven't had the proper education/training.

  • As pp mentioned...I'm not really knowledgeable enough to suggest exercises to strengthen your back - I wouldn't want you to reinjure yourself trying to stay healthy! ;)

    I do know that a guy I work with who has had 2 back surgeries said that running is much too hard on him anymore (he used to run a lot), and walking is okay...But biking is even better for him.  He also really enjoys swimming...

    So I would suggest maybe looking into one of those, and then asking your doctor or PT person for exercises to strengthen your back :)
  • After my car accident a few years ago, my back was completely screwed up. I went swimming every day. It doesn't put any pressure or weight on your back, and it actually helps it to feel better :)
  • Talk with a PT.  I herniated a disc in my back, and I had a relapse two months ago because I wasn't careful at the gymj.  I think either the elliptical or sit ups were at fault.  People swear by yoga, but it was aggravating things for me.  Swimming my doctor says is also good.
  • I had back surgery 2 years ago and I walked, which helped me. Swimming is also a good one that was recomended to me. pilates, yoga. But I agree with everybody else, talk with your doctor and physical therapist they will point you in the right direction. And there are many different types of surgery so that includes different recovery and exercise.
