Chicago recs

H and I are spending 3 days in Chicago (we're staying in Northbrook, actually) in November.  We'll take the train into the city.  H has never been, so I have a decent idea for stuff to do, but I'm hoping for some lunch and dinner restaurant recs, please!

Re: Chicago recs

  • I went to Chicago once and loved it.  I can't remember where we ate though.  You should try www.tripadvisor.com.  I use that site all the time and love it.  You can search for restaurants by city and it'll give you the reviews of each one and what their rank is.
  • Some of our favorite restaurants are Girl and the Goat (you're not likely to get reservations for next month, but it's worth the wait if you head in when they open), Carnivale, Table 52, and MK.  Bongo Room has great brunch.  Sweet Mandy B's has amazing cupcakes, cakes, etc.

  • Ooh, we love brunch!  We will definitely have to check out Bongo Room.  I've heard good things about Table 52 as well.  Thanks!

  • For Mexican we love Cantina Laredo on State. It's modern Mexican and they have delicious guacamole made tableside. We also really like the atmosphere--very modern and contemporary and they have a nice big fireplace that makes it cozy on cold days (which Nov. probably will be).

There are a lot of options for your Chicago deep dish pizza, but our personal favorite is Gino's East.

  • Lou Manalti's deep dish with butter crust is out of this world.  There's several locations and many of them are take-out only, so make sure you visit an eat-in one.  (I tried Giordano's and didn't like it.  Haven't tried Gino's.)  There are good Greek restaurants in Greektown, I like Greek Islands, they have a hot cheese appetizer that they set on fire.  It's amazing!  If you are in the mood for a super cheap, unhealthy meal, check out Gene & Jude's for a hot dog and fries.  There are no tables so you have to stand at a counter or eat in your car.  A coworker and I were actually in Chicago in June and were filmed eating on the hood of our car by the food network for the show Sandwich King!
  • Mmm, we love Mexican, we might have to check that one out, Summer.

And I totally forgot about pizza.  Shame on me, H loves Chicago style pizza, but he's never had REAL Chicago style pizza.  We should probably change that.

We also love Greek food, yum.

  • Do you eat sushi?  Sunda New Asian was fantastic.  http://www.sundachicago.com/.

Also, The Gage was great for lunch.  http://www.thegagechicago.com/.

I personally LOVE The Signature Room, but I know a lot of people say it's overpriced.  I've eaten there 3 times and never had a bad meal.  And the view is stunning.  http://www.signatureroom.com/.

  • What's your budget and taste?

-Like pp, we've at at Signature Room at the Hancock and had a great meal (although I think it was pricier, like $200+ with app, entrees, wine and dessert); otherwise, it's worth the $10+/drink to go to the Signature Lounge, which is the bar for a drink and the view (they have decent apps too).
-There are lots of pizza options, downtown I prefer Giordano's (but there's also Edwardo's, Gino's East and Lou Malnati's)
-Carmine's on Rush St has great italian
-Potbelly's is a (toasted) sandwich chain that's a cheap and easy lunch
-Blue Agave is a Mexican restaurant that's pretty good in Gold Coast (few block west/inland of John Hancock)
    -Greek Isles is really good!
-If you like beer, Haymarket is a brewery in West Loop with good (but limited) food menu

-Magnolia Bakery is a chain, but is right downtown on State St (near Lake)
-The Roof at the Wit Hotel is right there too and is a great rooftop (partially enclosed) for a drink

If you have any more specific questions; please ask! There are a lot of us Chicago ladies on this board!
  • I agree with PP on the Signature Lounge. I'd probably do that for drinks rather than the Signature Room for dinner. The view is amazing and they have good desserts too (make sure to take your camera into the women's restroom--it honestly has THE best view from inside of it!)
