How Long to Plan a wedding?

We just got engaged and would like to get married in Septemeber/October 2012 in Boston.  Are we crazy to even consider this?

How long does planning a wedding really take?

Re: How Long to Plan a wedding?

  • Sept/Oct is peek season so I think a 2012 wedding would be tough at this point. If you are open to Friday/Sundays you may have more flexibility. Some of the venues we looked at had all Saturdays booked in Sept 2013! Don't rule it out but be prepared for places being booked up. Good luck!

  • What places did you look at that work booked?
  • I don't think its crazy--I'm having a June 2013 wedding and people look at me like I'm crazy so I would guess 9-10 months is plenty of time.

  • I definitely think its doable you just need to get moving.  I would definitely talk to venues about open dates for that time frame before going and looking at a lot to make sure they were still available on your choice dates.  If you find a lot are booked Saturdays talk to them about Fridays and Sundays.

  • I got engaged on December 20, 2011, and my wedding is September 29, 2012 - so it's definitely possible! (We booked the venue and band on Friday.) That said, you should book a venue and band ASAP, because a lot of them are very booked up.

Where are you looking? As of last week, there were still Saturday dates in Sept./Oct. at the Fairmont Copley, Taj, Omni Parker House, deCordova Museum, Hotel Marlowe - and probably several others!
  • It's totally doable. I'm planning mine over 10 months and it hasn't been bad at all. That being said, you should book your venue as soon as you can. If you are open to a Friday or Sunday wedding, you will have an easier time finding available vendors.

  • I got engaged this past August, but we didn't decide on a time frame until Christmas. We are planning for this coming August, and we are most likely going with the Holiday Inn at Boxborough. They had a lot of Saturdays open for September, and I got this information three days ago.

I'm feeling pretty confident that we won't have a problem planning this wedding, but based on what I've read (and what other people have told me) we'll just need to get in gear and get the ball rolling. It's defnitely do-able.
  • i planned an October 1st wedding with about 10 months.  One thing I will tell you is be open about the actual date.  We knew we wanted a Saturday in October and then looked at venues.  A few were booked, a few weren't....and the venue we ended up with had two saturdays to pick from.

I would avoid October 6th, as it is Columbus day and things will probably be more expensive.

Get your venue, get your dress and then go from there :)
  • Yes, it definitely possible, you just need to get going soon! You will need to give things up and be flexible if you're going to have your wedding in the fall since a lot of venues and vendors will be booked already. But if your flexible with your dates and vision of your wedding, you can definitely get it done. A friend of mine just got engaged two weeks ago and just booked a venue for August. There's definitely options left. As soon as you settle on a date and venue everything else will slowly fall into place. Good luck!

  • We book an early July date in early December.  You really just need to see if dates are open for venue/vendors.   As long as they are open, you really don't need more time than that to plan.  You make the big decision on vendors, etc right away, then details as things get closer.
  • Realistically I am looling at March 2013, but I REALLY want November 2012 on a Friday. I just got engaged Dec 24th. I guess it depends on the venues. Once I have that squared away, I think I could possibly make it happen
  • I am proof that you can do it! ;)
  • The off days really help. I have been planning for a little over a year. But havent had any date problems with August because of the Friday and im still booking smaller things now. I thought more people would tell me there booked only one of the cheaper places we liked had Saturdays all booked for the summer month  we wanted and just 1 friday open. So i depends on the popularity of the vendor too for how quick they book. Just get started and you'll be fine.
