Zumba is kicking my ass! (Basically me complaining)

I started out doing Zumba classes once a week about 2 months ago. A few weeks ago, another one started local so I've been going to that one too. This week, another one started in the town where I live. So I'm going Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Its the first week for three times a week and I feel like I've been run over by a truck. I'm pretty much fine except for previous injury areas. I broke my right ankle in April 09 and its really sore tonight. I injured my right knee at work 3 years ago and that sore as well as my left knee because I've been favoring my right. And my right shoulder's muscles are "loose" so in certain positions, my shoulder slips in and out of place, so thats swollen and sore too. Grr. I really love Zumba. Its fun and its something I actually want to do, but this week just sucks. As long as I don't move, I'm fine. I know I've come a long way since I started, and I know this is going to get better. I just don't want to wait for that. Thanks for listening.

  • Three days in a row seems like a lot - you might want to try mixing it up, maybe only do Zumba Mondays & Wednesdays, then some weight lifting on tuesdays/thursdays?

  • Ouch!  take care of yourself.

Sound like you could really use a rest day in between.  Three days in a row may be way more than your body can handle.  I suggest dropping the Tuesday class for a little while and see how much it helps to have a day off for recovery.  It's likely nothing to do with how strong you are, a lot of people really need rest after their workouts for that muscle and such has time to build and repair.  No rest time = no repair time which can lead to a permanent injury.
  • If you're injuring yourself, it's not worth it. It sounds like your body is at it's breaking point. Don't completely stop zumba but maybe just cut back to only 2X a week. Also, mix it up, try something new and different.

  • Don't over-do it! This time last year I was taking Zumba on Tuesdays and Thursdays and another cardio class on Mondays and Wednesdays - and I ended up with Plantar Fasciitis. Not saying that's exactly what will happen to you, but it really sucked and I was unable to do much for intense exercise after that (no jumping, running, sort of thing - and an extremely sore foot - plus wearing shoes 24/7, seriously).

It took me 6 months to fully "recover" and I still have to be careful to wear the right kind of shoes and not to push my body past its limits. A day of rest is good for you, please take it for the sake of your body! Smile

If you get injured you're going to be very disappointed, I know I was.
