Custom dress vent!

So, I'm having my dress custom made. Couldn't really find anything off the rack that fit and that I liked in our price range, so went to a seamstress that came highly recommended. She had a number of 'sample' dresses that I tried on and liked, we discussed a few details that I wanted to change, colors, picked out the lace and so on. Measurements were also taken at that time. I went to see the dress this morning, and although it's not quite to the point where I can try it on...the bodice looks so UGLY on the dress form. I know, that doesn't mean anything, and it's very likely that the dress form is a different shape than my body, but it was so disconcerting. The neckline was too high or the waistband was too low on the dress form, I couldn't tell exactly which.

The dress will be ready early next week, and she's happy to make any changes that it will need. I'm just worried now, because it looked so terrible on the mannequin. Cry

  • Did you address your issues with her when you were there?  I wouldn't panic until you actually try it on.

  • Yes, I did. She said we could adjust the neckline but that it would be best to wait until I can try it on - the front of the bodice is made of a single piece of lace and once it's been cut, it can't really be brough back up without creating a seam. It's a sleeveless v-neck and the point of the v just seems a little high.

I'm not quite at panic mode - just a little antsy that maybe it isn't going to turn out as I expected. Our date is at the end of June, so if it doesn't work out at all in the end, my choices will be fairly limited.

  • I am sure it will turn out beautifully.  Since you already tried on some of her work and liked it I wouldn't worry.  (I know, that's easy for me to say.)  My Mom has sewn clothing for my sisters and I all through our growing up years and, without fail, they looked AWFUL at the midway mark but always pulled together once it was finished.  Try to relax and don't stress until you're able to try it on.  It sounds like the seamstress is experienced and talented, so I'd say you're in safe hands.  :)
