how long was/is your engagement?

My wedding is about 2.5 months away and I'm so excited!  It feels like we have been engaged FOREVER (our engagement will be exactly 16 months long) but I have friends who were engaged for 6 months and others for over 2 years.  We  needed a longer engagement because we needed to save money for a house (we both live with our parents)  My fiance was a recent college grad who just started a new job and I was working contract jobs...therefore, we had no money!  if we could have aforded a down payment right away we would have been married in a matter of months!

How long was/is your engagement and why did you chose that amount of time?

Re: how long was/is your engagement?

  • We were engaged for a year and 9 months.

    Engaged: September 2010
    Married: June 22, 2012

We wanted to wait until I graduated from college (May 2012) before getting married. I also wanted to be a June bride and didn't think 9 months was enough time to plan. Looking back I realize that it was. There were times were I enjoyed the long engagement and times were I didn't.

  • Ours was 3 days short of 16 months.  When we were dating but starting to talk about marriage (fall 2009), I told DH that I wanted about a year to plan the wedding (we were both still in college) but I wasn't going to plan without a ring.  We were both thinking early Summer 2011 for the wedding.  He bought the ring over Thanksgiving Break 2009, talked to my dad January 2010, and then proposed less than a month later on Valentine's Day.  I didn't think he would propose until around my birthday in April, but he wanted it to be a complete surprise and Valentine's Day was the one day I didn't think he would propose.  We set the date based on when I would graduate (he finished up a semester earlier) and when my brother (student) and two of his sisters and mom (teachers out of state) would be out of school, as well.
  • 25 months.  Although they supported our engagement, DH's parents didn't want us to get married before he finished med school.  We respected their wishes and got married two weeks after he graduated.

  • my mom wanted us to have a 2 year engagement but that was too long for us
  • We were also engaged for a year and 9 months (Oct. 2010-July 2012)

We were engaged that long because we knew that we wanted to get married on our dating anniversary, but knew that we wouldn't be able to save up for our dream HM in 9 months and weren't about to compromise with it.

  • Less than 8 months. We were engaged in January, told family in February and started planning in March. We were married the first weekend in August.

  • Well, we were together almost 13 months when we got engaged, and will have an engagement of 9 months. Plenty of time to plan, but also enough time to just be together and still get to know each other more and more!

  • 6 months

We were long distance dating for our entire relationship, and we wanted to get married as soon as possible. I felt 6 months was reasonable for me to plan while working full time.
  • We got engaged with the ring in Feb of this year[a few days before our 2 year annivesary]  and are getting married in 58 days..
So that's about 8 months... But we were planning for the year before and he had lost his job right after we looked at rings that Nov. So I actually had a dress [totally with his approval before i went to the store] and we had been buying things together previously [ Cheap printable invites , lil stuff like that ] So our planning is kinda minimal cause in a sense we kinda "stockpiled" before the official down on one knee... Not typical and people frown upon it but when we knew we would be getting married regardless of when /ring , it didnt seem like idea and really it wasnt .

People say it cheats yor experiance... Well honestly I'm planning a wedding started a new job and this week I start school so I knew i'd be busy and I dont regret the pre-planning to save my sanity and a few dollars... ;p

So right now my main focus is finding a place to live ... wedding planning is minimal ..

  • We were engaged one day shy of a year (364 days). I wanted about 9 months to a year to plan and we wanted to get married in the summer because we are both teachers. My cousin got married in June so we didn't want it to be too close to his wedding. And we didn't want to have it in August because we'd have to start getting ready to go back to school right after the honeymoon. So, we were engaged July 9, 2010 and got married July 8, 2011.
  • We were engaged for 18 months and it was way too long for us. WAY too long. I loved how our wedding turned out, but I totally would have settled for less if it meant we could have gotten married sooner.

  • Engaged: May 7, 2011
    Wedding: Sept 22, 2012

The time frame was really a matter of our vision for the wedding. We wanted a fall wedding, but didn't want to have to rush to plan so rather than fall 2011 decided to wait for fall 2012.
  • We will have been engaged for 8 eight months. We got engaged Feb 2012. I thought I had always wanted a spring wedding, but spring was too soon. My F has 3 children from a previous relationship so that would have been way too soon for them. The following spring was too long to wait so we decided a fall wedding would be beautiful and hopefully a little cooler. You never know around here, though. It turns out that the date we chose - October 13th - is my cousin's birthday. He passed away quite a few years ago so that date is even more special now. We were really close and I knew that was his birthday, but it didn't hit me until later.

  • 11 months.

It was perfect, just long enough to book a good venue.  We got engaged in September and knew we wanted a summer/early fall wedding of the next year so it worked out perfectly.  Any shorter and it would have been hard to get a venue.

just over 13 months.  We got engaged either at the end of October or the beginning of November (11 years later and we still can't agree on when it was!) and got married December 14 of the following year.

We were officially engaged for 9 months. I use the word officially because we booked the "big stuff" before getting engaged so we got a head start, lol.

We started dating in 2008 and got married in 2011. I would have loved to have gotten married earlier (2010) but it really boiled down to finances that pushed our wedding date to early 2011.

We were engaged for 21 months (a year and 9 months, which seems common around here, lol).

    Engaged:  February 14, 2010
    Married:  November 19, 2011

We were both in college when we got engaged and wanted to wait at least until I graduated (May 2010) and got a full-time job (October 2010).  We set a date and started planning in September 2010.

    Engaged: November 18th, 2011

  • Engaged: July 20th, 2012
    Married: May 18th, 2013

We too were guilty of pre-planning. We did not want to get engaged before we knew we could afford to have the wedding we wanted. We lucked out and could afford it in the Spring and he felt comfortable to propose.

Ours was 9 months.  We picked that because we wanted to spend our summer in Germany and I wanted to get as much time there as possible.  It worked out great for us and we didn't do any preplanning. Also I was going to school and working part time, sometimes things were stressful and when my wedding was a week after finals week I thought I was going to die but over all things were good :)

Total: 13 months to the day.
We chose it because I'm a snob and wanted a summer wedding that was far enough away from our birthdays, Sept and Nov 26, but still in the summer. :)

  • It feels like forever, since I've considered us engaged since last summer, but we will be officially engaged in the next month, so for our spring wedding, it will be about 4 to 4.5 months of "official" engagement.
