Anyone like white zinfandel?

I really don't like wine, but I have found that I like white zinfandel. (Is that even wine?) Anyone know of good brands that are cheap?

I bought some Arbor Mist, and I am pretty sure it isn't the greatest. Embarassed I have had it before and knew it wasn't horrible. It is super sweet though. I am looking for something that is not as sweet and has more alcohol in it. haha

PS~ Sorry that I am a PW today. I am bored watching tv and waiting for FI to get home from work. :P

Do you have any wine shops in your area?  See when they have wine reps in for tastings and go check them out.  You're drinking the super sweet wines (though there are desset wines that are sweeter, but more complex) and you might be interested in trying other kinds to find the ones you like best.  There are oaky, buttery chardonay wines that are almost opposite what you're trying and then there are lots of different wines that are in between.  A wine rep would probably have a blast giving you samples.  They love teaching!

Arbor Mist is kind of like Boones Farm...it's more of a wine cooler than wine.

White Zin is a sweet, inexpensive wine.  It's not very complex and my sense is that people find it easy to drink a lot of it as a result.

If you want to step up a notch, you could try to move to Pinot Crigio or Ovieto.  Pinot Grigio is another wine that's fairly sweet, but not as basic at white zin.

Here's a little chart that shows some varieties and what foods they often pair with:

Is Pino Crigio and Ovieto bitter and more dry? That is what I don't like about other wines, the bitterness and how your tongue gets dry..... I am probably just a baby. haha

  • Try a moscato. It's like grape juice to me, but my favorite wines are a deep, oaky Spanish Rioja.
  • Your in luck my aunt is a huge white zinfandel drinker, it's all she drinks. Three good brands are stutter home, glen Ellen, and berringer. My aunt usually drinks Sutter Home and it's pretty reasonably priced too.

Pinot Grigio is also sweet, but not as candy-like as white zin.  It's definitely not as complex as a good Chardonay or a nice Sauvignon Blanc.

White Zin is kind of like Bud Light. It's popular and drinkable, but not exactly high quality.  Some people are Bud Light drinkers for life.  Some people move on to more complex varieties.

Take your time...you could host a party where your girlfriends each bring a different type of wine and do a big tasting that way, if you don't have a wine shop in your area.  If you have a wine shop, go in and see if they do tastings.  You might also look into wine dinners, where you'll get a different style of wine with each course.  :)
  • I am not a big wine drinker but I have recently realized that I like Riesling.  It's also a very light, easy white wine to drink.  For someone who doesn't drink wine, on more than one occasion I have drank a bottle of Reisling by myself without getting too drunk.  Don't think lowly of me....it was our neighborhood Christmas party and our neighborhood New Years party so I only had to go 3 houses down.

<div>I was scrolling through this thread, thinking about suggesting Reisling--I'll just add my vote! It's a nice white wine that isn't overly sweet. My brother loves Moscato, but I think it tastes like apple juice.</div>
  • I don't think we have a wine shop in town... We went to Albertsons and got White Zin and Pinot Grigio from Golden Gate. (They were clearancing all of their Golden Gate wines out, so I decided to try that.) I will get the Shutter Homes next time. I'm not sure if I like the Pinot Grigio, but I will drink the whole bottle and see what I think later.

How long does wine keep after you open it? I am replacing the cork and leaving it on the counter..... Sound okay? I am seriously dumb when it comes to wine. :S

  • I loved drinking Beringer White Zin for awhile. I also love the resiling that comes in a blue bottle and says Relax down the bottle.

Posted by doeie04[/QUOTE]If you are just using a cork, it's only going to last a few days.  Most people would refridgerate a white wine.  The fridge is a tad colder than ideal, but it's better than sitting out on the counter.

If you start to really get into wine, get a Vacu-Vin set.  It has rubber corks and an little pump that you use to remove the air so the wine keeps a little longer.

Just to be sure, you said you DO NOT like how sweet the white zin was?  If that is the case, you definitely will not like Reisling, which is a very sweet style of wine (same with Muscat and Gewurztraminer).  They are very sugary wines.  I personally don't like them.  :)

See how you feel about the Pinot Grigio.  If you still find that too sweet, move into the Sauvignon Blanc territory or see if the person in the wine area at the super market can recommend a chardonnay that is not oaky or buttery.  One that was aged in silver might be perfect for you.
  • I agree with Cvill on everything.
I started with White Zin; moved on to a Resiling, Gewürztraminer, and a Moscato.
They were sweet and I could drink them with no problem... then slowly I went to Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. Then onto some reds...I don't drink white a whole lot anymore. I love Pinot Noir! But it is all about tasting different things and your palette will evolve :)

I started out my wine adventures only liking white zin as well - one brand I like was Sutter Home, but in college I was known to have a box of Franzia's white zin lurking at all times!  Not the best quality ever but inexpensive and still alright.

I don't like wines that are too dry either, so the types I tend to drink are Pinot Grigio, Moscato, & Riesling.  Sometimes the last two are a bit too sweet for me, but I agree with Cvilleclaire that you should try to have some sort of a tasting to narrow down what you like best.  It also depends on what you're eating with it, that can really affect how the wine tastes.  Read the bottles & descriptions on the shelf at the liquor store, they're pretty helpful!

If you have a World Market near you, you might want to check it out.  They do a pretty nice job of labeling and describing the wines they carry on their signage.

If something has gotten great ratings, they will usually post the points.  If you see a 90+ bottle selling for $10-15, grab it!

If you ever see bottles of wine called "90 Plus Wines," snap them up immediately.  They get great, expensive wines and sell them at a fraction of the cost by no revealing what vineyard is behind them.  My bother is a 90 Plus freak.  I haven't found them in my area yet.  :(

  • If you don't like the taste of red or white wine I would suggest Moscato! the Barefoot brand is my favorite. It's cheap and sweet. :)

  • I'd also suggest the Red Lexia wine by Alice White.  It is inexpenisve and sweet.  My family is a big fan of it.

  • Thanks for all the responses. I like the White Zin, but the Arbor Mist was way too sweet and you have to drink a ton to feel the buz! haha

You guys have great suggestions! I am writing this stuff down. :P
