NWR: alternatives to local cable

We're sick of our high cable bill.  My haggler DH called yesterday and threatened to cancel to see if they'd give us a better deal, but they wouldn't bite...  they even told us that we're still on a promotional rate for our $149 bill - cable, internet and phone.  ugh, it will go up in March!
We're trying to research alternatives, anyone have any suggestions? 
We're currently watching on hi-def TVs, addicted to our DVR, but also watching a lot of older seasons of shows on DVD.  I'd be up for cancelling completely, but we need internet somehow and I want to still be able to have access to some current shows (like Biggest Loser, American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance...)

    I'm thinking about cutting the cable too! I've heard good things about Direct TV and Dish Network.  You would still need Comcast (or whoever) for Cable.

    Can't recommend Fairpoint, but if you're near enough to a Verizon area you could look into FIOS - not necessarily cheaper just better.

    If you want any sort of quality internet you'll want to stick with either comcast or verizon.

    As for tv you could do comcast, verizon, direct tv, or dish... downside to dish or direct tv is that you will be getting crap picture when it's crappy out. You can still get all your local channels on dish or direct tv.

    My parents have had nothing but trouble with Direct TV. They thought about switching to Dish, but they wouldn't get Channel 9. 

    We have Comcast and I'm pretty sure what I'm paying is highway robbery. I will say, however, that we paid for HD for several months and were given a "free" HD box when we finally got HD. Can't complain about that!

    Well, my parents live in Nashua and don't have cable or a dish or anything like that.  In fact, they have an antenna on the roof.  You'd be surprised how many channels they get!  They get FOX, NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS and more.  So you're covered on the big shows.  Of course, having an antenna is like being in the stone age, but hey, it's a heck of a lot cheaper!  And they just got Comcast for internet.  We had dial-up before that and that did suck.
