Keeping Him in the Wedding Theme

My FI and I are having a slightly book themed wedding since I want to be an English teacher and I love literature. Our colors and date are already picked out but I have a feeling that my FI thinks that the wedding is all about me and not about him. Is there any way I can incorperate his likes into the wedding theme witout it being too much?

Just some general information, he repairs computers, likes video games and loves typical "American" food like burgers, fries, milkshakes, etc.

I would ask him what he wants. Or put him "in charge" of some aspects (ie, food, entertainment, etc).

I agree with PP--your FI will probably have opinions if you ask him. We're doing an evening buffet to give the guests some nourishment during the dancing (it'll be in between the band's first and second sets), and in that we'll be serving bite-size burgers, bite size fish n' chips, some light wraps, and an array of desserts. Guy-friendly stuff. It was a nice way to incorporate more whimsical foods since the dinner itself a formal, candlelit, plated evening affair.

We're also having a designated "fun" room (mainly for the kids) with video games, wii, a movie, board games, and a kinect to keep the little people entertained while their parents get down on the dance floor... though I imagine some of the "kids" in there will be full-grown men!

Finally, we're having a lounge area set up away from the dance floor with cocktail tables and couches so that people can sit around and hang out if they're not crazy about big band dancing. Easy for guys to sit around and chat over a beer instead of getting stuck in the taffeta ghetto for hours on end!

Just some thoughts...

You could have a late night snack that is mini burgers, fries, and small servings of milkshakes. You could also incorporate that kind of food into your main meal, depending on what else you're thinking about having.

Does he have any particular musical tastes?

Is he willing to look through wedding magazines and tear out pictures of things he likes (food, decorations, flowers, anything)? Tell him that tearing a picture out doesn't mean you have to use it, it's just to get a lot of ideas, so that he doesn't worry about having to commit to any idea right away.

Yes - Ask him what he wants!!! He probably has opinions and would like to share them with you.

My H had only a few requests for the wedding. He wanted to wear a tux, have a cheese platter, and have a late night snack. That was about it. He was soooo happy with the fancy cheese platter.

Men can be amazingly easy to please (note the use of the word can rather than are ;). I put H in charge of all the food, and you wouldn't believe how happy he was with his seven pounds of local goat cheese. It was expensive, and he ordered WAY too much of it (seriously, seven pounds completely fills two gallon sized zip locks), but he was thrilled about it.

Ditto PPs. Just ask him if there is anything he would like to do. My FI likes video games too. I played around with the idea of using instrumental music from the games he likes, but he didn't want to do that. The only thing he wants so far is to have pocket squares instead of boutonnieres and to not see me before the wedding.

I think if you are going for a literary thing, it would almost be cute to turn it into an "American Dream" type theme somehow. When I think of typical American Dream styles I think of 50s and 60s vintage style with girls in cute skirts carrying books and people in malt shops. I definitely think including the food into the cocktail hour or a snack would be awesome. MAYBE the cocktail hour could have milkshakes and sliders and video games to keep people occupied?

Wow some of these are great ideas! And my FI and I both love the 1950s/60s. We actually saw a Frankie Valli tribute show the night he proposed. And he had given me his opinion on a lot of things and the date and colors were a collaboration on both our parts. I'm thinking I may have him choose something big (like the food) he would want to be in charge of. It's his day too after all

My way of putting DF likes into the wedding were through the favors (he LOVES sweets), the cookie bar (he LOVES cookies), the cocktail hour (chicken fingers with shots of orange soda; which is all he ever gets when we go out to bars ha), and he was totally charge of our music for the DJ as he is a music major/ teacher.

We also have things that are about both of us. For example, we play Scrabble constantly. When we go to our favorite restaurant every week, we always play scrabble on our iPod touch lol weird but true. So wewill have travel scrabble boards on each table.

Have fun with your wedding and make sure it is about both of you
