No DJ at reception, will people still dance to an ipod?

Hello, I unforunately don't have the budget to hire a DJ for my reception which is going to be in a country club's ballroom with dance floor. Our MC is very out going, funny and loud, so we decided we are going to give him our list of songs that we want and have him lead the dancing.

MC is going to mix the songs ahead of the time but will probably be on the dance floor/ grabbing the mic once in a while to yell out something. Does that sound like it's going to work? The worst thing is to have an empty dance floor!

p.s. We are all musicians, so there won't be any problems picking out music that we want.

  • A friend did this at her reception and it worked great.  We had a bunch of fun compiling the play list.

  • When the music is on point, no one cares how or what it's coming from.  We had a New Years party where the DJ played music from an iPod and the dance floor stayed full ALL night!

I think you will be just fine.  Just remember its what they hear that gets them moving.

    Good luck!

  • As long as you have someone in charge of the ipod, and that knows the playlist.. like your MC then I think you should be just fine.. you dont want to be the one running to change songs or anything though so make sure your MC is on top of it!

  • I'm using my IPod too. You will be fine.

  • me too! I actually just found an app called MyDj that allows you to crossfade songs so you don't get that awkward pause between songs. I've been testing it out with my planned playlist on my commute and it works really well!
  • My sister did this, their Best Man was the DJ at their first reception.  It worked for the most part (most guests just didn't dance till they were drunk), the only thing that really wasn't fun was the BM spent the whole night at the laptop with a beer and didn't really dance..

  • This is exactly what we're doing, OP, only a friend of ours volunteered to be the MC. She happens to be a DJ's apprentice, too, so that's why she volunteered. But we'll be using a laptop with all of our music and then some. Our friend will be supplying more "danceable" music that guests will want to dance to.
  • We were planning on doing this for our music when the band isn't playing (they're friends of ours and will probably only play a couple of songs because they don't really do weddings.) But I'm a little nervous about what music to include- we don't like most of the pop music- Rihanna, Katy Perry, Black Eyed Peas = ugh..... if a lot of pop music would cause us to change the channel, how do we keep it familiar but tolerable for us?? Anyone care to share their list....?

</div><div>I'm the same way! We are not really into popular music like Beyonce or Lady Gaga. We are into Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Radiohead, Metric, Mumford & Sons...etc. Not exactly songs that you hear often on dance floors. Will people dance to songs that they don't know?

  • I would dance to songs I didn't know, especially if other people are dancing.  Also, I am familiar with most of your bands (RHCP and Radiohead rock) so I'd be on the floor with you!! :)

  • Friends of ours did this at their wedding a few years ago. It worked really well. And they also are not into mainstream radio music. The good part is generally neither are most of your friends - so when they were playing RHCP, Radiohead, Foo Fighters etc the dance floor was full. It was the music that most of their friends listened to anyway! They had a nice mix of older classic rock for the older generations, but everyone had a great time. No Lady Gaga, Black-eyed Peas etc at all!

    We're having a DJ, but we're struggling with deciding on/finding a MC.
