Anybody know how to crochet?

I've been trying to learn. I got a beginners book at Hobby Lobby that explains how to, but it confused me so I just looked at the pictures and figured it out. My "designs" or loops or whatever they are look pretty but I somehow keep managing to make a ruffle. I don't know what exactly I'm doing I'm wrong.

  • Maybe you're not consistent with how tightly you're pulling the yarn?  I haven't crocheted in 7 years though, so I don't really remember anything.  Maybe you could find something on you tube?

  • Yep... but I have no idea how to teach you over the internet. lol.

I'm crocheting a vest right now. Finished my third baby blanket this year last week... I've been in a crocheting mood.

  • As PP said, no idea how to explain on the net, but I crochet rather frequently!
  • I have watched videos on youtube, but that isn't helping me understand why it keeps turning into a ruffle...

  • I'd say you probably haven't found a consistent tension (rather normal when you first start off) or you're using the wrong size hook for your yarn maybe.

  • I didn't know the hook mattered lol! ...that is probably it then.  lol thanks

Probably the tension would be my guess...also counting!!! COUNT COUNT COUNT...its easy to miss count, So if i start a new project I make sure and count more often, or even if I am tired or mentally distracted I make sure and count more.

  • Ruffles normally mean that you're increasing - so instead of putting one stitch in each, you may be putting more than one stitch in each. Like the PP said, count. I don't count since I prefer to just look at it and make sure there is one to one, but it may help you to count - at least to give you an idea of what you're doing wrong. I know you mentioned that you have already looked at YouTube but it helped me a lot when I first started. Books were really helpful, but sometimes they are very hard to follow and I even had one that left out an entire step that I couldn't get until I watched YouTube. I have found Teresa to be the most help. Her videos are called The Art of Crochet by Teresa, I believe. You have to stop and restart a lot, but it's worth it.

  • Oh, one thing I forgot to mention is that crochet just takes a bit of practice, too. You will need to crochet a while to get good at keeping a constant amount of tension.  And there are so many things that I still don't know what I was doing wrong, but the more I did it the better it got. And some things even seem to have a switch lol. What I mean is I went a long time of not being able to get my sides straight to almost magically doing it right ever since. A lot is just getting the feel of it.
